Lifeafterhummus Community Benefit Society
Thanks to a team of 50 local volunteers supporting a small team of 3 people we run a surplus foodbank very close to UCL campuses in Somers Town (NW1 1ES) just north of the Euston Road behind the British Library. We collect surplus from circa 45 local supermarkets and stores every week using a mixture of hand carts, bicycle trailers, cargo bike and cars. This surplus is sorted thru at our surplus…
Description

🚴 Movement for Good: Be the Engine Behind Our Community Food Redistribution

Lifeafterhummus Community Benefit Society is BME and POC-led based in Somers Town. We use surplus "waste" food and pre-loved items as a vehicle for radical community support.
We are an intersectional, neurodivergent, and queer-led team. In a neighbourhood facing significant deprivation and food desertification, we don't run a "food bank" - we run a community development project that empowers residents through a circular economy.

💓 The Heartbeat: Our Collection Squad

While we offer many roles, Collections are the heartbeat of our operation. Every month, we redistribute 5 tonnes of surplus food from 45 stores. Because many of our local "members" (residents who volunteer in exchange for their shop) face health challenges or physical barriers, we rely on students who "volunteer for the vibes"- the high-energy, active individuals who can help us move this food.

Without our collectors on foot, bike, or car, our community kitchen would stay empty, our community cafe that offers employability to local resident would close, and our social supermarket shelves would be bare. We need you to be the engine that makes this possible.

Duties

📋 What You Can Help With

Please select all that apply on our sign-up form:

  • Collections, Sorting & Redistribution (High Priority): The "heavy lifting" that powers us. Moving surplus on foot, bicycle, or car.
  • Community Cafe: Supporting our community cafe supervisor to mentor residents with SEND and those facing employment barriers. You are the "operational ally" that makes their learning possible.
  • Community Kitchen: Getting hands-on with prep, washing, and chopping surplus ingredients for our community cafe meals.
  • Sorting Pre-loved Items: Assisting our dedicated volunteer on Thursdays and Saturdays to organise and grade clothing, kitchenware, toys, shoes, and more.
  • Community Gardening & Sewing: New projects starting soon—perfect for those who want to build something from the ground up!
  • Social Media: Professional/personal experience needed to help us tell our story.
  • Leafleting: Direct grassroots outreach to ensure our neighbours know what support is available.
Training
Any training is done in person and we have our volunteer handbook.

Time commitment

We require a regular commitment per term of the same day every week or every other week for 2-3 hours mostly between 11:15 am and 5:00 pm.

This organisation is one of our community partner organisations.

Like all volunteer recruiters we work with, they have signed up to our service standards, agreeing to abide by our policy on partnership working to keep you safe and supported whilst you volunteer.

You’ll never be out of pocket for volunteering through us – with in-London travel expenses to and from your volunteering guaranteed.

In addition, the team here at Students’ Union UCL Volunteering Service is here to support you throughout your volunteering journey – you can get in touch with us at any time.
