For the first time, we marked National Volunteers’ Week with a trio of standout events that showcased the extraordinary impact UCL staff and students make across our local communities. Together, these events mobilised more than 600 volunteers, reflecting the scale, energy and generosity of our community. They also formed a key part of the UCL200 Summer Festival, honouring UCL’s 200th anniversary and the spirit of volunteering that continues to shape our institution.
UCL Achieves a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ Title
UCL and Students’ Union UCL have officially become GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title holders, setting the record for the largest number of people crafting cards simultaneously. It was our biggest Crafternoon yet! An extraordinary moment that brought together more than 400 students, staff and local residents in a shared act of creativity and kindness.
Together, they produced hundreds of handmade cards destined for older people across Camden, offering connection, warmth, and a reminder that their community cares. This record‑breaking event shows the remarkable impact that can be achieved when hundreds of people unite for a moment of micro‑volunteering with a big purpose.
The cards will now be delivered to community centres supporting older residents, including Age UK Camden, Holborn Community Centre, and several centres partnered with Camden Council.
The Help Out That Made History
Despite torrential rain and widespread tube strikes, more than 160 students and staff showed up with determination and energy for our Biggest Help Out yet. Their commitment powered a day of hands on support for local community organisations; from litter‑picking by canoe along the canal, to repairing an adventure playground, restoring vital green spaces along the River Thames and spending meaningful time befriending older people living with dementia.
This extraordinary turnout demonstrates the strength of the UCL community and the real difference we can make when we come together with purpose.
A Campus United in Dance
UCL student volunteers came together to power the delivery of our Community Dance Day, helping to create a warm, welcoming and inclusive experience for both the UCL and local community. Volunteers greeted attendees, supported participation throughout the day, and helped bring to life a series of vibrant workshops from Salsa to Maypole dancing, blending Folk traditions with Hip Hop movement.
These events are a powerful reminder of the difference UCL students and staff can make when they come together for a cause.
How We Support Students to Make an Impact
The Community Volunteering Team supports students to participate in volunteering in the local community. Students can volunteer with an organisation listed on our Volunteering Directory, set-up their own Student-Led Project or volunteer at one of our Big Help Out events.
