Description

Camden Canals and Narrowboat Association are looking to improve the experience that people have when travelling on narrowboat Tarporley.

A historic guide on a community narrowboat would bring the waterway’s history to life for passengers while supporting the charity’s educational and community aims

We are looking at finding students who are interested in the history and geography of the London canal system. It is a much more rewarding experience for our customers if they can be told what they are seeing and a little bit about the history of what used to be there in times gone by.

Duties
  • Welcoming groups and introducing the trip with an overview of the boat, canal, and charity.
  • Giving commentary or storytelling about the history of the canal, the boat, local landmarks, and life on the waterways past and present.
  • Engaging passengers with questions, anecdotes, and age-appropriate activities (for schools, families, or community groups).
  • Helping to connect history to the present, highlighting how canals are used today and their importance to the local community.
  • Supporting the crew when needed (e.g. helping with safety briefings, assisting vulnerable passengers).
  • Acting as an ambassador for heritage and the charity, encouraging visitors to value and support canal conservation.
Who will the volunteers be working with?
Skipper, Crew, Passengers and any officer who is abord. You may also would with the staff at the canal musum to further your knowledge
Training
Camden canals and Narrowboat Association are an accredited National Community Boats Accredited Training Centre.

Will will train all volunteers as crew if they wish and we will give them access to staff at the canal museum to further their knowledge of the canals

Time commitment

There is no fixed commitment in this role as we would be asking for volunteers for each trip as and when the trips are booked. We would however ask that you are available for at least one trip per month and commit to the full academic year.
