Volunteer with London Play DesignSupport us in transforming communities through hands-on work experience, maintaining and building playgrounds and green spaces. About London Play Design
Description

Setting up community gardening activities in Lewishams adventure playgrounds.

LPD has established five community gardening opportunities across Lewisham, each equipped with the tools to care for the grounds. We’re seeking volunteers to practice their gardening in the adventure playgrounds by working closely with local residents and our team.

During weekdays, local residents will have access to maintain the grounds and participate in workshops and activities—before children arrive after school. While we provide a basic framework, gardeners will have the flexibility to adapt their approach to meet each community’s needs.

All gardens must remain free and accessible to the community, be playful for participants, and adhere to health, safety, and safeguarding requirements.

Duties
  • Garden Coordination – Plan gardening sessions, working with residents to maintain the grounds.
  • Community Engagement – Encourage local residents to join weekday gardening and workshops, creating a welcoming environment.
  • Workshop Facilitation – Organise interactive sessions on gardening and sustainability, tailored to community needs.
  • Health, Safety, and Safeguarding – Uphold safety measures and follow safeguarding procedures for all participants.
  • Collaboration & Reporting – Work with the LPD team and playground staff, providing regular updates on progress.
Who will the volunteers be working with?
Throughout the project, you will work closely with our Community Engagement Lead, local residents, partner charities and community organizations, the local council, and the Adventure Playground staff at your assigned location.
Training
We provide in-house training for hands-on landscaping and carpentry skills and are open to offering any additional training you may need, such as first aid or health and safety.

Time commitment

Volunteers should commit to at least 10 months or remain until the project is established and successfully handed over to the local community. We ask for a minimum of 6 hours of volunteer work per week, ideally 12 hours, with flexibility around scheduling based on both project needs and volunteer availability.

This organisation is one of our community partner organisations.

Like all volunteer recruiters we work with, they have signed up to our service standards, agreeing to abide by our policy on partnership working to keep you safe and supported whilst you volunteer.

You’ll never be out of pocket for volunteering through us – with in-London travel expenses to and from your volunteering guaranteed.

In addition, the team here at Students’ Union UCL Volunteering Service is here to support you throughout your volunteering journey – you can get in touch with us at any time.
