Training Link
Training Link is a local basic skills training organisation. Founded in 1985, we are based at the back of the British Library, in Somers Town. We provide courses to help people find employment and to encourage them back into adult education and to develop their skills. We provide a variety of courses, including IT, food hygiene, business administration and English as a Second or Other Language (…
Description

We're a small charity based in Somers Town, a short walk from UCL.  We're one of the most popular places for UCL students to volunteer, with around 30 students each year volunteering their time to support our programme.

We need Adult Literacy Tutors to help our beneficiaries develop their English language and literacy skills through 1-1 weekly sessions. The majority of our learners are women who have migrated from countries such as Bangladesh, Somalia and Eritrea, with others coming from Latin America and Europe. Many live in Somers Town itself and are more comfortable using a free and friendly community centre on their doorstep rather than more formal places like colleges. In the last year, our work has extended to support some Ukrainian refugees.

We accept applications all year round and look forward to hearing from you.

Duties

To provide guidance and support to learners working to improve their reading, writing, speaking, listening spelling or grammar. Whatever area the learner wishes to improve, we try to help.

Who will the volunteers be working with?
1-1 with one learner
Training
We don't actually offer specific training, but the project coordinator is always available for advice and support- and we can help provide teaching materials. That will greatly reduce your preparation time.

Time commitment

1-2 hours a week for a lesson + preparation time -during term time. Outside of term time, volunteer and learner decide if they want to take a break. We ask if you can commit for at least 3 months.

You’ll never be out of pocket for volunteering through us – with in-London travel expenses to and from your volunteering guaranteed.

In addition, the team here at Students’ Union UCL Volunteering Service is here to support you throughout your volunteering journey – you can get in touch with us at any time.
