My name is Anastasia, I am a Masters student here at UCL and a participant on the BUCS Women's Leadership Programme.

To me, 'This Girl Can' means that any female, despite their background, can get involved in sport. This could be through trying something new for the first time, or competing at any level. There should be no barriers for women who want to take part.

What inspired you to become a leader?

"Throughout my time playing football I have undertaken various leadership positions, such as being captain. This experience then inspired me to take on committee positions at university and be a leader on and off the pitch."

Why did you apply for the BUCS Women's Leadership Programme and what is the biggest lesson you have taken away from it?

"I applied for the BUCS Women's Leadership Programme because I wanted to develop my existing leadership skills and network with other females that are involved in football."

For you, what is the best thing about being a leader and why would you recommend volunteering/working in sport?

"For me, being a leader has developed my confidence and enabled me to assert myself into decision-making situations. I would recommend volunteering or working within sport as it enables you to work alongside other individuals from diverse backgrounds and collaborate as a team."

Have you faced any challenges in your leadership journey and how have you overcome them?

"A frequent challenge that I have faced throughout my leadership journey is feeling inferior in committee positions, due to the male-dominated nature of football. Growing my confidence, knowledge of the sport and leadership skills, through programmes such as the BUCS Women's Leadership Programme, has enabled me to overcome this and still get involved."

What one piece of advice would you give to another female who is interested in beginning their own leadership journey, or wanting to develop their leadership skills?

"Go for it! Leadership opportunities for women in sport are increasing everyday. There are now so many different ways to get involved!"
