Why join?
Join SEM Society to learn useful skills and knowledge you can actually apply.
We explore the science behind sport, evidence-based lifting, training plans, injury prevention, rehabilitation and performance. You will have the chance to learn about common sport and exercise injuries, how to reduce injury risk, how to return to sport safely, and how exercise is used in healthcare.
Our sessions may cover topics such as concussion in contact sports, tennis and thrower’s elbow, running injuries, knee and ankle injuries, sport-specific training, taping, bracing and basic assessment of joints, muscles and tendons.
Whether your goal is to improve your own performance, help teammates avoid injury, learn practical skills, or explore a career in Sport and Exercise Medicine, this society is built for you.
What we offer
Practical skills and training science
We run beginner-friendly sessions on sport science, evidence-based lifting, training, injury prevention, rehabilitation and performance.
Workshops may include taping, bracing, first-aid, common sports injuries, sport-specific conditioning, exercise prescription, return-to-play decisions, and practical assessment skills. The aim is simple: help you train smarter, move better, avoid injury where possible, and understand the science behind performance.
Careers and mentorship
Our careers panels and speaker events introduce students to routes into Sport and Exercise Medicine, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, research, public health, orthopaedics, emergency medicine and other related fields.
We also aim to connect students with mentors, senior studentsand early-career professionals for guidance on careers, intercalation, research, shadowing and wider SEM opportunities.
Research and academic support
Our journal clubs and academic sessions help students build confidence with reading research, discussing evidence, preparing essays, developing presentations and finding project opportunities.
No assumed knowledge, no unnecessary jargon — just useful support for anyone interested in sport, exercise, health and performance.
Sport, welfare and socials
SEM Society is also a diverse community. We plan to run relaxed socials, quiz nights, multicultural evenings, welfare check-ins and collaborations with UCL sports clubs and other relevant societies.
Bigger opportunities
We aim to connect members with conferences, external events, clinical and research opportunities, and national undergraduate SEM networks.
UCL SEM Society hosted the National Undergraduate SEM Conference in 2024, bringing together speakers from Premier League football, Premiership rugby, Olympic sport and wider SEM professions, including sessions highlighting opportunities for women in the field.
We also hope to explore trips to relevant sport, performance and rehabilitation venues where possible.
Get involved
Whether you are aiming for a career in SEM, play sport at UCL, train in the gym, or just want to understand sport and performance better, we would love to have you involved.
