Welcome future UCL student! Welcome Week is just around the corner, and we know you’re excited (and maybe a little unsure about what to pack). Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. This list includes all the essentials while keeping things practical and stress-free.

Remember, you’re moving into a new home, not relocating your entire life so you don’t need to pack everything. Let’s get started!

Bedroom bliss: Your sleep & study sanctuary

Your bedroom is your retreat, whether you’re sleeping, studying, or just relaxing between lectures. Make it comfortable and functional to help you feel more at home.

 Essentials:

  • Duvet, pillows, and mattress protector
  • Bedding: duvet cover, sheets, pillowcases (bring a spare set)
  • Coat hangers and draw organisers
  • Laundry basket
  • Desk lamp for late-night study sessions or reading
  • Earplugs (just in case the walls are thin)
  • Dressing gown (perfect for lazy and cold mornings)

Top Tip:  Don’t forget command strips or poster putty. Some halls don’t allow Blu Tack or nails, so check before decorating.

Top Tip: Bring your winter clothes for term 1 and then bring your summery clothes after Winter Break to save space.

Bathroom bonanza: Keeping it fresh

Whether you have an en-suite or shared bathrooms, staying clean and organised is key.

 Essentials:

  • Bath and hand towels (plus a bath mat to avoid slips)
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss
  • Shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner
  • Deodorant
  • Hairbrush and toiletries (razors, skincare, makeup—whatever you use)
  • First aid kit (plasters, painkillers, and any medications, especially for cold and flus. Freshers’ Flu is no joke!)

Top Tip:  Pack a hanging shower caddy so it’s easy to carry all your things to and from from shared bathrooms.

Kitchen essentials: For the aspiring chef

If you’re self-catered, you’ll need to bring some basics. There may be some bits and pieces provided by your accommodation so check with them!

Essentials:

  • Cutlery, plate, bowl, mug, and glass (avoid sharing dramas)
  • Sharp knife and chopping board (safety first)
  • Frying pan and saucepan (for cooking essentials)
  • Tupperware (meal prep saves money)
  • Washing-up liquid, sponge, and tea towels (keep things clean)

Top Tip:  Some realtors and websites sell whole kitchen sets for students which can be cheaper than buying everything individually.

Miscellaneous must-haves: The extras you’ll actually need

These little things will make your life much easier.

 Essentials:

  • Laptop and charger (your academic lifeline)
  • Phone and charger (obviously)
  • Headphones (for study, calls, and blocking out noise)
  • Extension lead (outlets are never where you need them)
  • Reusable water bottle and tote bag (eco-friendly and practical)
  • Fancy dress outfit (Freshers’ Week means themed nights)

Top Tip:  Bring a doorstop to keep your room open when you move in to make instant friends.

Important documents: Don’t leave home without these

Boring but absolutely necessary - keep these safe.

 Essentials:

  • Passport or driving licence (ID for nights out and admin. Please be aware our bars only accept UK IDs. You can find out more information here.)
  • University acceptance letter and accommodation contract
  • Student finance documents
  • Bank card (for emergencies)
  • NHS number and any medical info

Top Tip:  Scan or photograph all important documents—keep digital copies on your phone in case you lose anything.

Final thoughts: Pack smart, not heavy

You don’t need to bring everything- you’ll buy so many things during the year without realising it! Focus on the essentials, leave space for new purchases, and get ready for an amazing experience.
