We are very proud to announce that TeamUCL have been awarded £10,000 from Sport England to create opportunities for disabled students to take part in sport and physical activity.
According to Sport England’s Active Lives survey only 45% of disabled people take part in sport or physical activity, in comparison to 65% of non-disabled people. One of the main reasons for this is a lack of opportunity to participate and so with thanks to Sport England we are going to offer more than 100 disabled students free personal training sessions at Bloomsbury Fitness, and also wheelchair basketball sessions at Somers Town community centre on Thursday nights.
Gym and Personal training
From 4 October 2021 disabled students will have the opportunity to make the most of free personal training sessions at Bloomsbury Fitness. Students can then book into weekly fitness session with their preferred instructor with each student having access to five free personal sessions.
The gym instructors will ensure equipment is appropriately cleaned and social distancing guidelines are followed.
Wheelchair basketball sessions
We will be hosting weekly wheelchair basketball sessions at Somers town Community Centre (5 minutes from campus) on Thursday evenings from 18:30-19:30. These will start on 7 October and run through to March. The sessions will be led by expert coaches from Hackney Sparrows and are catered for students who are wheelchair users and are also open to students who are non-wheelchair users. There will be sports chairs at the venue for you to use. If you are interested in taking part, you can sign up here .
