The Students’ Union UCL wants to be a union that actively operates in line with and advocates for UCL students’ sustainability interests. To do so, we have recruited an excellent cohort of Sustainability Ambassadors at the beginning of the term. The Ambassadors will work in different areas alongside the elected Sustainability Officer and Union Affairs Officer for 2022-23, supported by other staff across the Union, to help implement some of the actions outlined in the SU Sustainability Strategy 2022-25. They will also represent you in this year's Student Sustainability Council.

Get to know your Ambassadors and their motivations for volunteering in the role this year below!

Communication & Engagement Ambassadors

We want to communicate sustainability in a way that informs, educates, and empowers our students. Our priorities include being more transparent about what we are doing to work on the issues students care about and ensure students have access to opportunities and resources to help them get involved in sustainability action and make informed decisions about their impact on the environment. Communications and Engagement Ambassadors play the vital role of representing the student voice in our communication channels and have their own special place in our sustainability communication plan.

Laura Dewhurst

MSc Science Communication

I would love the opportunity to promote UCL’s sustainability strategies, and to engage students in the different ways that they can make meaningful changes.

Amran Sourafel

BSc Economics

I would love to get involved in making UCL a more sustainable place and to help other students create more environmentally friendly decisions.

Nuzulia Fajriningrum

MSc Economics & Policy of the Energy and the Environment

I want to learn how to inform people in a fun and effective way to be interested in doing something for sustainability.

Gardening Ambassadors

We have got our first ever Union outdoor planting area, and we need students with passion for gardening and biodiversity to help provide tender loving care to the plants! Our Student Gardeners would look after the Print Room Café outdoor area as well as the community planters in Malet Place and use it as an opportunity for biodiversity observations and engaging the campus community around nature.

Clara Sicard

MSc Biodiversity & Conservation

With my studies, I mostly learn the theory behind sustainable practices, therefore being a Sustainability Ambassador allows me to get some real-world examples of sustainable actions.

Mady Roussat

MSc Brain & Mind Sciences

I would like to learn how to communicate the knowledge of plants and how to care for them to students and the general public in order to increase collective interest in environmental preservation.

Jade Wong

BSc Architectural & Interdisciplinary Studies

I am particularly interested in the role as I understand the benefits of greenery in an urban environment from a social health as well as a biodiversity and water management point of view.

Fairtrade Ambassadors

Providing students with an ethical way of getting their caffeine or chocolate fix on campus creates an opportunity for raising awareness about Fairtrade Foundation and its positive impacts on farmer communities, the climate and global trade, which in turn helps shape habits and values of our members – the leaders and shapers of tomorrow. Fairtrade Ambassadors will support the delivery of UCL Fairtrade action plan and lead on Fairtrade stewardship for the Union with promotional and educational campaigns.

Aqil Rashid

BSc Earth Sciences

I can assist the university in achieving Fairtrade action plan objectives in a timely fashion and making a difference in our supply chain through my passion in working towards a sustainable future and circular economy.

Wing Lee

MSc Global Health & Development

Through volunteering as a Fairtrade Ambassador, I would like to participate in the movement and encourage more people to consume sustainably and ethically at UCL.

Community Ambassadors

Students at UCL have been involved in a lot of innovative and impactful sustainability action, contributing to making change possible with their research, volunteering, and extracurricular activity through clubs and societies. We want to facilitate a sense of community among students working on sustainability initiatives for even greater impact and outreach. Community Ambassadors will help coordinate and communicate resources and opportunities for student groups committed to sustainability, as well as contribute to recognising and rewarding their commitment and impact.

Aleksandr Ignatev

BSc Population Health Sciences

I want to contribute to cooperation between societies, faculties and external organisations working together towards a common goal.

Mark Boyadzhiev

BA History

I would like to encourage the introduction of a voluntary ‘green pledge’ across all societies within the student union to stimulate sustainability related events and engage, empower, and educate students in embedding green initiatives in their area.

Megan Taylor

BA International Social and Political Studies

My main goal of becoming a Sustainability Ambassador is to spread awareness of projects occurring on campus and engage a wider range of students to develop a strong understanding of the student body’s sustainability habits.

Rajlakshmi Patil

BA Geography

I wish to instil the same passion I share for the environment amongst my peers and strive towards making this prestigious institution more sustainable and greener.
