Science Magazine Society: Vice President

Do you know why the Sun is still up at 9pm even though we're in London? I'm guessing it's probably something to do with Science, and I love Science so if you elect me I'll figure out this mystery for you! (Please don't google or ChatGPT it or I'll be out of a job).

Good Sunny Day everybody, my name is Kai and I'm a BSc Human Sciences student here at UCL. As a BSc Human Sciences student, I feel like we are the walking definition of multidisciplinary to the extent that we don't belong to a single department, thus adding to my credibility as a multi-disciplined man ready to write about the night sun. As a core officer in UCLUNA, UNICEF Society and Communications Society, I hope to translate my competencies in running a society to aid in the growth and expansion of our amazing Science Magazine. 

Now onto my plans as a potential vice-president. Collaborate and Expand. Firstly, I hope to reach out to think tanks, institutions and laboratories for potential partnerships with our yearly publications, offering their name and legitimacy onto our magazine in exchange for potential articles, compensation or general partnerships. Secondly, I hope to extend this nature of collaboration to other UCL societies, many of which are branching out into think-tanks and magazines of their own. I wish to utilize this opportunity for collaboration to cross-post and grow simultaneously with these societies with shared articles and social outreach, ensuring that we reach a wider audience.

Science communication is deeply important in as AI and misinformation regularly circulate the internet. Employers look to hire people who are familiar with the field and have writing experience. Let's ensure that Science Mag can be that place!

As vice-president, I will:

• Provide skills workshops throughout the year to help writers develop throughout the year.
• Help students register with national associations for science communications in their field, such as ABSW.
• Support students who wish to enter into the Student Publication Association (SPA) Awards, and hopefully win an award this year!
• Organise a trip to the SPA National Conference.
• Host networking events and a career fair for those interested in pursuing science communication.
• Assist students in developing portfolio websites to highlight their work.
