Throughout my first year in medicine, I have enjoyed every moment playing/racing for RUMS. Be it boat club or rugby, I have made some unforgettable memories, and lifelong friendships. Everyone appreciates how challenging a medicine degree can be, but when I have stuggled with stress, I have always leaned on sports to lift me up. I can appreciate that for some people, starting a sport can seem daunting, and people may be put off from signing up in freshers fair, especailly when you are trying to settle into halls, and get to grips with studying at a university. As sports officer, I would like to encourage people to sign up to sports throughout the entire year, even if they missed part of fresher's fair. In addition, I can understand that some people are put off by the competative nature of playing regular fixtures, and races. This is why I would like to try and create more social sports, as part of RUMS. For example, I think a running club that runs parallel to our existing clubs could be really beneficial in helping to achieve this, and it would provide members of existing clubs to interact more socially. I have benefitted massively from the friendships I have gained as being a part of two large clubs in RUMS. I have loved my first year, and the sports clubs have been a huge part of that. It would be a privilege to be in a committee role where I would be able to encourage and support people in creating memories and friendships that will last long past their graduation.
