Summary of proposed changes
It has come to our attention that the current constitution has not incorporated our planned initiatives to expand the types of events we offer or the structure of the committee, as it was copied from last year’s version. To successfully implement our expansion strategy, we have made several changes aimed at broadening the scale and scope of our team and activities. These changes are essential to engage a wider external audience and ensure the society’s continued growth and success.
Society Name:
When reestablishing the society for the 2023/24 academic year, the committee initially considered renaming the society but hesitated due to concerns about the length of the new name. However, since our inception, we have observed that our visibility and recognition remain largely confined within the STS department. This limited awareness stems from the ambiguity of the 'STS' acronym, which does not clearly convey the society’s focus to the wider student body.
In light of our expansion efforts, which are aimed at reaching a broader audience interested in interdisciplinary discussions on topics such as AI ethics and responsible innovation, we propose renaming the society. This will improve visibility, clarify our purpose, and make our activities more accessible to potential members. Importantly, the new name will still reflect our roots in the STS department and embody the innovative spirit of the Lunar Society of Birmingham while attracting students with diverse interests in science and technology.
Constitutional Additions:
To support this expansion, we propose the following new committee positions:
3.6 Marketing Officer
Role is to create and distribute posts and messages to enhance the society’s online and offline presence, ensuring timely promotion of the society and its events to society members and external audiences.
3.7 First Year Representatives
Role is to be responsible for fostering first-year participation and inclusivity within the society, serving as their primary point of contact.
3.8 Postgraduate Representative(s)
Role is to be responsible for promoting postgraduate participation and inclusivity in the society, acting as their primary point of contact.
