Yiming Yao (Minnie)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I am a feminist and have created an interactive webpage analyzing the marginalization of female characters in Chinese suspense dramas, proposing three manifestations and reasons (https://yishenren.github.io/wicid/).

As a IOE PASHE student representative, I ensured that everyone felt understood and heard, becoming a reliable link between students and faculty. As Vice Manager at the Communication University of China’s Radio Station, I sharpened my organizational skills through 140 live broadcasts. I led national-level projects and completed six internships, equipping me to share practical tips.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I am dedicated to advancing gender equality within our institution by raising awareness of issues such as discrimination and harassment. For instance, I have observed that many UCL societies have signed the Zero Tolerance to Sexual Harassment Pledge, and I propose we adopt similar measures.

I also aim to implement programs that empower women, including workshops, mentorship opportunities, and leadership training to enhance their skills and confidence. I will encourage more women to take on leadership roles, ensuring that diverse perspectives are incorporated into decision-making processes.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I ask for your vote because I am committed to advocating for women’s rights and gender equality at UCL. My background as a feminist and my interactive webpage analyzing the marginalization of female characters in Chinese suspense dramas reflect this dedication. As an IOE PASHE student representative, I built trust and ensured that every voice was heard. I have extensive experience communicating with student and sabbatical officers, and my major in digital media equips me to conduct in-depth research on network issues.

Together, we can create a more equitable environment for all women students.
