Jamie Whelan
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I bring a diversity of academic appointments, from high school to university, with educational experiences from Ireland, Canada, UAE and the UK. I am involved in innovative chemical research as well as student mentoring and influential outreach projects at my current institution. As a distance student at the IOE, I have insight into the unique challenges we face in staying connected. I understand the diverse needs and voices of students, and as your Faculty Rep I will be here to ensure that everyone is heard, valued, and supported, fostering a more connected and inclusive academic community.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

Using my experience as a university lecturer and distance learning PhD student at the IOE, I will bridge communication between students and faculty, ensuring all voices are heard and valued. I will collaborate with the education and postgraduate officers in advocating for minimized disruptions during strikes, enhanced bursary supports, and ensure that training programme courses meet the needs of our student body. My goal is to foster a more connected, inclusive, and supportive academic community, enhancing the educational experiences and opportunities for all students within the faculty.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I wear two hats that are relevant for this position, that of a distance learning postgraduate student at the IOE, and as a lecturer at my current institution. This gives me a unique insight into how to effectively work with our academics here at the IOE to argue for what is best for our student body. I want to enhance the educational experience for all of us, while promoting inclusivity and championing student support mechanisms. I have a deep commitment to student advocacy, and want to bring this passion to the IOE to help everyone create a thriving academic community.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I bring a wealth of experience in student engagement and advocacy. My involvement with the welcome team and the student union has given me valuable insights into the needs and concerns of our student community. This experience has equipped me with the skills to effectively represent and support the interests of our doctoral student body. Besides, my academic pursuits of promoting inclusion align closely with the UCL’s commitment. Becoming a Rep would give me a unique platform to share my knowledge and experiences and foster a diverse and supportive environment.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I will actively work to make IOE a true home for doctoral students. I will advocate for practical improvements such as securing more dedicated spaces, like microwave facilities and additional areas for discussion and study. Furthermore, I found limited chances to meet with peers and have deep conversations. I will use the room provided by the IoE helpdesk to organize various events such as mental health support, reading groups and lunch social talks. My vision is to create a vibrant academic and social community that fosters collaboration, learning, and networking among doctoral students.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

In essence, I will bring a distinctive blend of experience and a well-defined vision to enrich the doctoral student experience at IOE. Students' vote for me signifies support for a committed candidate focused on fortifying both the academic and social aspects of our community, ultimately striving to make IOE the optimal environment for our doctoral studies. This year, anticipate more than just warming food in the microwave; expect a dynamic and cutting-edge approach to doctoral life and information.
