I am applying for the role of Neurology and Neurosurgery Chair because I’m fascinated by the precision and depth of this field. Neuroscience sits at the intersection of biology, behaviour, and identity. It challenges medics not just to learn anatomy, but to think critically, localise systematically, and make clear decisions under pressure. Neurosurgery, in particular, involves a balance between technical excellence and deep theoretical understanding that I find incredibly compelling.
I am drawn to subspecialties that require structured reasoning as well as systems-based thinking, and neurology exemplifies this through clinical localisation and diagnostic problem-solving. I am especially interested in how advances in neuroscience research translate into surgical innovation, whether in neuro-oncology, functional neurosurgery, or trauma.
If elected, I would focus on three priorities: organising engaging, case-based talks that explore clinical reasoning; increasing practical exposure through skills sessions and signposting shadowing opportunities; and ensuring the section feels welcoming and accessible to students at all stages, whether you’re a first year medic or final year.
I would love the opportunity to build and be a part of UCL surgical society that is thoughtful, practical, and inspiring. I think neurosurgery has a reputation for being intimidating, and I’d love to help make it feel more accessible and less daunting for students who are just starting to explore it.
Hello, I’m Gabriel and I’m enthused to run as your Neurology & Neurosurgery Chair next year! The competitive and complex aura of neurology & neurosurgery wards off many students too early before they learn to appreciate the intricacies of the field and what the career entails. I aim to foster a collaborative environment where meaningful conversations regarding the field can prosper.
