Two students will be elected to the role of Student Trustee.

As a Student Trustee, you will be a member of the Trustee Board that ensures Students Union UCL has the necessary financial and structural stability to carry out its aims effectively. On a practical level, this means you need to be able to make major decisions on legal and financial issues and ensure that Students Union UCL is delivering on the political policy set by the elected representatives of Students Union UCL.

Read the role description here.

Candidates

Natalie Tang (She/her)
Voice. Action. Impact.
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

Hi everyone, I am Natalie!

If selected, I will:

1. Champion financial transparency – scrutinise budgets to ensure money reaches the services students truly need.

2. Safeguard long-term resources for student wellbeing and activities, securing sustainable funding.

3. Be your voice at board level – holding the Union accountable to its promises on inclusivity and support, ensuring student voices shape strategic direction.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I bring proven leadership from inside UCL SU. As Campaigns Representative for the Women's Network, I've led impactful campaigns on safety and funding. As Social Secretary for the International Students' Network, I've organised events that build community. This experience taught me how our Union operates and where it can improve. My internships in high-pressure environments developed my ability to analyse complex information and make sound decisions. I am independent, objective, and committed to the Trustee's duty: acting selflessly in the best interests of all students.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Vote for me because I understand both the heart and the mechanics of our Union. I've worked on the ground in two networks, so I know the real-world impact of funding decisions. I have the leadership experience to scrutinise budgets, the integrity to prioritise students' interests, and the independence to hold the Union accountable. I am not just another candidate—I am someone who has already been delivering for you. A vote for me is a vote for informed, student-first leadership at the highest level.

Heres what being a Trustee actually entails

  • You sit in 12, 2-3 hour long meetings a year with up to 12 other Trustees
  • The agenda will be discussion surrounding widespread initiatives and plans for the Union, and very long financial papers.

Meetings will fly by if you're not outspoken so: you need to be outspoken 🗣️
You also need to know what is possible, and how to present it to the Union if you want to get it done.

I have two (2) years of experience engaging in Union politics, I know exactly what can be done, how to do it, and when to say it.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I've had a pleasure serving you this past year and working with Sabbs to push for initiatives that I know the activities scene will benefit from.

I have been actively engaged in student politics 🗳️ since I started at UCL and have obtained a thorough understanding of how the Union works.

This year I have served on 6 (six) society committees, and have a network of contacts in far more.

Most Importantly: I am present

I have been pushing for accountability and passed a policy to remove officers who vanish without doing their job
I have another in the works now: to have zones recorded and shared

Abir Ghosh Biswas (He/ Him)
Experienced in representation. Ready to represent you.
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

As First Year Representative in the UCL Economist Society, I have already acted as a bridge between students and committee decisions, and I want to scale that impact to the institutional level. As Student Trustee, I hope to strengthen transparency, ensure student priorities around wellbeing, affordability, and opportunity are consistently considered, and make governance feel accessible. My goal is simple, students should feel their voice meaningfully shapes UCL’s direction

Through serving as First Year Representative and Director of Social Events within the UCL Economist Society, I have developed strong listening, coordination, and communication skills across diverse student groups. I am organised, confident contributing in structured discussions, and comfortable representing collective views rather than personal opinions. I would bring professionalism, curiosity, and the willingness to ask thoughtful questions to ensure student perspectives are clearly articulated.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Students should vote for me because I am already actively involved in representing and engaging peers through my role as First Year Representative and wider society participation. I am approachable, responsive, and committed to listening beyond my immediate circle. I combine energy with responsibility, and I will communicate openly about decisions while ensuring student concerns are consistently raised at board level.

I am:

  • Highly organised and reliable: I keep track of things and get jobs done

I Will:

  • Put students first in every action I take as trustee

I'm Standing because I'm tired of Sitting
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

Let’s be honest, most candidates will promise transparency, accountability, and representation of students. Those things matter, but I want to make sure they actually happen. If elected, I’ll focus on asking the difficult questions that keep the Union financially strong, responsible, and working for students long-term. I want to do something different and actualy make Trustee decisions clearer and more visible to students, so you know how and why decisions are made and feel rightful ownership over your union. A Students’ Union works best when students don’t just vote for it - they trust it.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I bring vast leadership experience, initiative, and teamwork. As Student Council President and Head Boy, I learned how to represent different student views while making decisions that benefit the larger community. I was a trailblazer in starting student movements where there were no such before, which shows that I am proactive and solution-focused. I am responsible, conscientious, and fun, meaning that I take things seriously while working effectively with others. I have hiterto attempted to maintain as many relationships as possible with UCL students, and will strive to be their voice.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Vote for me if you want a Trustee who will push to make UCL and the Students’ Union more exciting, open, and genuinely enjoyable to be part of. Vote for me if you want someone who will question decisions, push for better ideas, and make sure the Union is always working for students. Vote for me if you want someone approachable, energetic, and actually fun to work with - not just another name on a board. If you want a Union that feels more alive, more engaging, and more student-focused, then I deserve your vote.

I'm Standing because I'm tired of Sitting
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

UCL is one of the most diverse universities in the world, and we're not making the most of that. If elected, I want to bring every voice to the table, no matter where you're from or what you're studying. With the cost of living absolutely cooked in London right now, I'll push for real student-exclusive discounts and perks across the city. I also want to unlock more opportunities in careers, networking, or just making uni life easier. Fresher or postgrad grinding through finals, you deserve more from your UCL experience. Let's actually make it happen.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Having lived across four continents and studied in international schools from Johannesburg to Prague, I genuinely understand what it's like to navigate new environments as an outsider. That experience gives me a natural ability to connect with students from all walks of life. My experiences taught me how to turn ideas into real, structured action and not just empty promises. I know what it feels like to be far from home, figuring it all out alone. I'm not here to put myself on a pedestal, I'm here because I've been that student who needed someone in their corner, and I want to be that for you.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

UCL has students from every corner of the world and somehow we still don't all feel included? Not on my watch. I'm here to make sure the Union's resources and decisions actually reflect every single one of us.

I'm the guy who's been through it with you. New country, expensive city. And now I want to make sure the Union's actually spending its money on what matters to you.

Finally, a Student Trustee isn't just a title, it's literally the person making sure this Union stays solid so every fresher, postgrad and international student gets what they came here for. That person should get it. I get it.

A more transparent Union for all!
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I want to ensure student voices are heard in the places where the biggest decisions are made. I hope to help the Students’ Union plan responsibly and be transparent about its decisions. My goal is to support a Union that is fair, financially sustainable, and works for all students, not just a few, so that it is equitable and equal in its decisions. The Union should be making decisions that actually benefit students and their voices. I hope to ensure that all decisions are fruitful, transparent, and made with care and consideration for the community of students they serve.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Through my degree and as a writer for multiple societies and publications, I have a strong research mindset and experience in analysing policy, weighing intended outputs against possible consequences that may not represent our student body. I understand that this role requires an independent, impartial mindset and the ability to work reliably as a member of the student union team. Currently, as a volunteer ambassador and on the committee of 3 societies, I believe I can bring that to the table while remaining responsible and fair.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

You should vote for me if you want a Student Trustee who takes the role seriously and attends meetings. I listen, ask questions, and carefully consider how decisions affect students. I won’t mess about, and I’ll focus on doing what’s right for students and helping the Union make fair, sensible decisions that benefit everyone. I am a strong, determined student with strong analytical skills in both research and writing. Given how the union has been run in the past, I want to ensure it is transparent, that everyone can have their voice heard, and that everyone knows what's happening.

Zehra Naqvi
Calm judgement, real student impact
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I will strengthen Students’ Union UCL’s governance through disciplined, evidence-based oversight. My probation officer experience developed risk awareness, confidentiality, and defensible decision-making within strict frameworks, which are skills directly relevant to Trustee responsibilities. A mini pupillage at Garden Court Chambers sharpened my ability to test arguments and identify gaps, particularly on finance, safeguarding, and reputational risk. As a prefect, house captain and netball captain, I will bring calm, fair representation focused on outcomes for all students.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I will bring careful judgment, disciplined preparation, and the confidence to challenge decisions constructively. As a probation officer, I worked within strict legal frameworks, handling confidential information, assessing risk, and making defensible decisions, directly relevant to Trustee oversight. A mini pupillage at Garden Court Chambers strengthened my ability to test arguments and spot gaps in reasoning. My Hartree internship built reliability with complex information and professional communication.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Students should vote for me because I combine direct student-facing experience with the judgment required of a charity Trustee. As a tutor at Explore Learning, I supported students with varied needs and helped them make measurable progress. As a sixth-form and netball captain, I represented peers fairly and led teams under pressure. I also bring governance discipline from work as a probation officer, where confidentiality, risk awareness and defensible decisions were essential, plus analytical scrutiny from a mini pupillage at Garden Court Chambers.

With intentionality, we can grow steadily!
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I wish to serve the student community by helping to ensure that the student union’s plans are optimised to enrich the lives of all UCL students. I will work to ascertain that there are accessible programmes for every student demographic to be enriched by, find community in and build skills through. As an international student, I am especially appreciative of the easy access to community the student union has provided and I hope to play a valuable role in ensuring the longevity and growth of this community.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I bring previous experience interning at the income team of a youth development non-profit which taught me how important it is for charities to maximise their social impact with the funding they have available. As such, I will always understand how vital it is to ensure that every initiative we undertake is highly effective. I will be conscientious of every decision we make, doing my best to ensure that it aligns with the student union’s mission to advance and further enrich all UCL students’ educational journey.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

If elected, I promise to do my due diligence to prepare for each meeting, be intentional in every decision and consider diverse perspectives to ensure accessibility for all. I will not only make full use of my current skills but also work proactively to build the necessary expertise to better serve my role as a student trustee.

Zara Farooqi (She/Her)
Leadership with Integrity.
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I will prioritise keeping governance closely connected to real student experience across campus, ensuring that decisions taken at board level genuinely reflect the needs and aspirations of UCL students. At the same time, I will work to ensure the Union remains financially strong, transparent and accountable, so it can continue delivering meaningful opportunities that matter to students.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

My internships at State Street Global Advisors and Allspring Global Investments exposed me to global organisations, analytical work and responsible decision making. I will bring integrity, independence and thoughtful judgement to the Trustee Board.

Know the System, Change the Union
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I will make UCLSU more transparent and accountable. Students often ask, “What does the Union do for us?” I want that answered through open reporting and Board-level scrutiny. I will streamline support for societies and sports clubs, removing the bureaucracy that holds them back. I will stand up for LGBTQ+, BAME and Disabled students so they are heard, not sidelined. I will ensure the Union advocates for Palestinian justice, protects demonstrators from repercussions, and opposes the attacks in Iran. I want a union where all students are heard!

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I offer a unique blend of high-level governance and grassroots activism. As a former Lancaster SU Sabbatical Officer and Trustee, I am skilled in navigating complex fiscal and legal documents to ensure accountability. Currently I am an Academic Rep Coordinator at Greenwich SU, I maintain a professional, up-to-the-minute understanding of UK Higher Education trends. I bring the expertise and dedication needed to represent UCL students with authority.
