Francis Deng
Minority sports, major voices.
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I hope to better represent minority and performance sports such as ice hockey, which often face unique challenges in funding, facilities, and visibility. Drawing on my experience in the UCL Ice Hockey team and BUIHA competitions, I want to improve communication between clubs and the Union, advocate for fair access to resources, and ensure that team culture, player wellbeing, and competitive commitment are properly recognised across all sports.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I bring first-hand experience as an active member of the UCL Ice Hockey team and a former Sports Rep in my first year. Competing in BUIHA, I understand the realities of minority sports: long travel, limited ice time, and balancing high commitment with academics. I also bring proven advocacy, organisation, and communication skills developed through committee and representative roles across UCL.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Students should vote for me because I represent sports from the inside. As an active member of the UCL Ice Hockey team, I understand the realities of team culture, BUIHA competition, and the challenges faced by minority sports. Alongside this, I bring strong advocacy experience from serving as a Sports Rep and Academic Representative, where I have successfully raised student concerns and worked with the Union to turn them into concrete outcomes. I am committed, approachable, and ready to speak up for sports students at UCL.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

As Sports Rep, I’ll push for making UCL training spaces more versatile, expand alumni networking sporting events, support events and campaigns that make sport at UCL accessible and enjoyable for everyone. I also wish to explore possibilities of making TeamUCL gym accessible 24/7.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I have been involved in (majorly before injury): Calisthenics, Squash, Swimming, Long distance cycling, Cross Country. In high school, I have cycled from Manali to Leh (India) and finished Top 6 in my house’s cross country team that won gold.

At UCL, I have been Hall Community Officer + Welfare Zone member (24-25) and am Marketing Manager - UCL MPBE, and Communications officer - Crooks Society for the current year.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

After messing up my back, I was forced to ditch a lot of heavy compound exercise and got into calisthenics instead. Honestly, it was a fun switch as I eventually found a balance between the two. It taught me how important smart, safe training is and how fitness can be about community, and longevity, and goes beyond numbers on a bar.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I want to build a vibrant Sports community here at UCL. I believe that every sports club should be given the platform to showcase the craft that they cherish and share their love for their sport with the rest of the student population. University-wide events and initiatives, from Sports Nights to Varsity, should be thematically focused on cultivating club identities and cultures. I hope for an energetic and welcoming community that invites everyone to give their respective sports a shot, that are interconnected and inclusive despite being scattered across various venues.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As a first-year and having just concluded my BUCS season with the M1 Volleyball Team, the short time with TeamUCL gave me a good understanding of the untapped potential of TeamUCL as the key outfit connecting all the teams together and champion for sports for all. I am deeply motivated and enthusiastic about drawing up fresh and innovative solutions during my term, that will be aided by the diverse skillsets I have honed over the years in various leadership roles in the workplace, school and the military. I believe I can bring to the role a balance of calm judgement and bold initiative.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I'm going in with the desire to try new things, push for bold initiatives and challenge the status quo for the benefit of you guys. Despite my relatively short time here, I can confidently say that I am proud to be a UCL student and a UCL athlete, and I hope that everyone can share this same pride as I have.
