Catharina Maschka

Hi everyone! My name is Catharina, a second-year BME student, and I would be honoured to be your MPBE President next year.

As Outreach Manager this year, I built a partnership with Fresenius Medical Care and secured grant funding that allowed us to take 20 lucky students to their R&D headquarters in Germany, an experience that changed how many of us think about our careers. Working closely with the current President, the committee, and the Students' Union has strengthened my skills in communication, funding, time management, and navigating the practicalities of running a society properly.

Before this, I was First Year Rep for the Engineering Society and currently serve as Technology Officer for the MedTech Society, giving me experience across everything from coding workshops to large-scale socials.

As President, I hope to:

  • Continue and expand our industry trips: immersive experiences that connect you to the field beyond the lecture theatre
  • Launch a society podcast, giving you a way to engage with research happening right here in our department when it suits you best
  • Build out a career, and academic resources on our website: CV templates, interview advice, and the kind of guidance I wish I'd had in my first year
  • Continue to strengthen our community across all year groups through socials and cross-society collaborations

This society has achieved so much this year, and I am excited to build on that momentum as your President.

Jack Croft

Over the past year, as Events Executive for the Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering (MPBE) Society, I’ve had the privilege of organising some of our biggest socials, including the Boat Party, Drinks & Thinks, Pizza Night, and our Speakers Conference. Through running these events, I’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, and most importantly, what people actually show up for.

Some things I would introduce as president include:

  •  Multiple industry trips, with a new addition of social club trips. Some ideas I have include hiking and sports events.
  •  Constant member feedback to ensure our events reflect their interests and preferences.
  •  Exciting merch people actually want to wear -  not just basic hoodies and t-shirts

Having already organised large-scale events, I understand the logistics, budgeting, promotion strategies, and timing required to make them successful. I know how to work with venues, speakers, and committees to deliver events that run smoothly. As President, I would use that experience to support the entire committee and ensure every event - social or academic - feels intentional and exciting.

I’d love your vote to make it happen.
