Geographical Society: President

Having gained leadership experience in a range of working environments, I am standing for President of the Geographical Society because I am committed to representing the student community with professionalism, enthusiasm, and accountability. As First Year Geographical Society Representative and Geography Academic Representative, I have built strong communication links between students and the department, whilst gaining valuable insight into how the society and its committee operate and deliver successful events, making me well prepared for this role.    

Through leadership roles in Girlguiding at both regional and international levels, I have strengthened my leadership skills, including delegation, prioritisation, and event coordination. Working independently whilst liaising with other leaders to schedule meetings has equipped me to manage logistics effectively and respond proactively to challenges to avoid conflict, which I believe are key, transferable skills essential to society's success.  

Overall, these experiences make me confident in my ability to become President of the UCL Geographical Society, with clear direction and effective communication alongside the committee to run both social and academic events for its members. I am motivated to ensure that student feedback directly shapes future events and to update module feedback forms so that the society continues to thrive as an inclusive, ambitious, and well-organised community with a range of opportunities for all. 

My name is Daniel, and I am a first-year BA geographer.

I am running for President of GeogSoc because I believe that geography should not be limited to lectures but be something we experience and shape together. No one should feel excluded, whether you are a first-year, international student or commuter. I want the society to feel inclusive and genuinely student led.

Having a space outside of lectures for building connections is fundamental to having a well-rounded university experience. I experienced this first-hand, as I found lectures did not provide the time to develop anything past surface-level connections.

If I am elected, I will:

• Organise events shaped by your input only, including monthly 'What do you want?' questionnaires – to ensure the society is shaped by you, for you
• More panels for geography careers, including with UCL alumni to try and support internship progression
• Commuter-friendly events, as I know that having events that are on your day off or finish late are difficult to attend
• Continue the tradition of a summer and winter ball, again, completely shaped by your opinions on venue, food choice and music
• Work with the rest of the committee to ensure all voices are heard

University is one of the only moments you will be immersed in a society-based culture of geographers. Let’s make the most of it.
