Hello! I am running for Welfare Officer for the Era Journal!
Over the course of this year, I have deeply enjoyed writing for the journal and being a part of the community. The writing process, workshops and socials have enriched my time at university dramatically. I think there is potential within this journal to become even better, most evidently in terms of welfare.
Era's reputation as a outlet for 'cool' people has acted as a double-edged sword. The standard of quality unique to student journals. That is in part thanks to its daunting nature. However, I also see that this quality makes it feel somewhat exclusionary and intimidating in a way that pushes away people that have beautiful art and writing to share. I want to change this by fostering a more welcoming and inclusive environment, most importantly when attracting new members.
The society would benefit greatly from more in-person regular events. Pitching, for example, would profit greatly for being an event, where ideas could be put forth and refined in a constructive manner, instead of just over periodic emails.
Writing workshops also could be extended for all the sections, where writers gather to give each other feedback on their pieces, or just to write theirs communally.
Encouraging more collaboratory events with other societies will further help improve the community feeling between the members.
I am standing to make the journal less fragmented and more welcoming, while keeping the extraordinary quality!
