When I first moved to London from Abu Dhabi, I couldn’t wait to start a new life, begin studying, and turn a new leaf. However, shortly after coming here, it became abundantly clear that I was homesick. From the food to my family, it wasn’t the same.
The UAE Society provided a glimpse of home, with a community and friendships that I was so incredibly grateful for. Working closely with the committee as Media Officer, I saw firsthand the care and attention to detail that went into organising each event. Being involved in the society also gave me insight into the planning and coordination required behind the scenes, which is something I would be keen to contribute to further as Treasurer.
As a Mechanical Engineering student, I have developed strong analytical and mathematical skills, along with an organised and detail-oriented approach to problem solving. I believe these skills would allow me to manage the society’s finances responsibly and support the committee in planning successful events.
As a first-year mechanical engineering student studying far from home, I quickly realised how important it is to have a community that feels familiar. The Emirati Society at UCL provides exactly that—a place where students can connect through shared culture, support one another, and create a sense of home while studying abroad.
This year, I had the opportunity to contribute to that environment as the Cultural Officer for the society, helping organise and support several events that brought our community together. Being involved in these initiatives allowed me to see firsthand how meaningful well-planned events and strong organisation can be in shaping members’ experiences and strengthening our community.
In addition, I held the position of Treasurer for Engineers Without Borders at UCL, where my responsibilities included managing budgets and assisting in the financing of societal initiatives. In order to support significant events and initiatives, this role taught me the significance of careful financial planning, transparency, and being certain that resources are spent efficiently.
I aim to contribute these experiences as Treasurer for the Emirati Society by helping manage finances responsibly while supporting the organisation of events that celebrate Emirati culture and strengthen connections among members. My goal is to help ensure the society continues to provide a welcoming and supportive space that contributes positively to the wellbeing of Emirati students at UCL.
