Dementia Research Society: Vice President

Hi, I’m Poppy!!

My interest in dementia began when my grandma got diagnosed with vascular dementia a few years ago. I wanted to try and understand the reasons behind her cognitive decline, and what was limiting her memory, so I began looking into the research of dementia. Skip ahead.. I’m now a second year NatSci student, majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Medical Physics.

In my studies, I’ve been able to grow my knowledge and bring together interdisciplinary perspectives on research. In neuroscience I’ve learnt about the cellular processes behind dementia, and in Medical Physics, I’ve seen how physics can be used to optimise medical imagining and quantify neurodegeneration throughout disease progression.

In my future career, I hope to be able to work with current scientific research to develop treatments and technologies for patients. I am passionate about being able to limit symptoms and improve quality of life for those suffering, especially in the later stages of progression.

While being part of this society, I’ve enjoyed keeping up to date with current research and having the opportunity to connect with people, with a common goal - to combat dementia.

As Vice President I’d love to bring in my interdisciplinary outlook, continue to spread awareness and bring together like-minded people. I believe incorporating academic lectures with social activities such as quizzes will allow us to best grow our community and bring together our combined passion.

I’m Ilgin, a first year biomedical sciences student. This year, as the freshers representative of our society, I worked together with the members of our committee and gained experience in organising and leading events, such as academic talks and socials. 

In the talks and discussions I participated in, I observed that our society attracts great minds. Every Q&A session broadened my perspective and left me even more interested in learning about neurodegeneration.

As someone who’s passionate about dementia research, I would love to help lead the society next year as the vice president, and continue making opportunities for our members to connect with researchers in this field and shape the future of neuroscience. 

I’m diligent and a good communicator. I’m confident when it comes to planning and organising. But even more than that, I find taking on responsibilities, especially when it comes to things I care about, really enjoyable.
