Hi, I’m Aya, and I’m running for Social Secretary of the Debating Society because I want to strengthen the social side of the society and make it easier for members to connect outside of formal debates.
Debating can be intense and competitive, and I believe strong socials are what turn a debating club into a real community. My experience organizing events and managing student communities across UCL societies has given me the skills to plan engaging and well-attended socials.
Relevant experience:
• Events Sub-Committee, UCL Arab Society – Helped coordinate large social and cultural events, including the ArabSoc Iftar, managing logistics and member engagement.
• External Relations, UCL Fashion Business Society – Organized industry panels and networking events, securing speakers and coordinating partnerships.
• Head of Technology & Marketing, UCL Law Society – Managed communications for a society of 800+ members, promoting events and increasing attendance.
• Head of Recreation & Development, UCL Tennis Society – Organized weekly social and recreational sessions for 200+ members, ensuring events were welcoming for both new and returning students.
As Social Secretary, I would organize post-debate socials, pub nights, themed socials, and cross-society events to help members build friendships, relax after competitions, and strengthen the debating community at UCL.
