Debate has always held a special place in my life, allowing me to challenge the constraints of censorship. From competing at national and international tournaments to working as a coach and being a part of the selection panel for the national team, I have lived this activity from every angle.Having debated for over 4 years and working as a debate coach, I have learnt the intricacies of not just the sport but the administrative work behind it. As a coach, I designed and delivered structured training programmes for students of multiple ages, developing critical research and feedback skills. It also gave me insight into the operational side, i.e, the planning and coordination required to keep a debate society functioning.
A secretary's role is to ensure the society runs with efficiency and care, managing communications, scheduling, etc. My time as COO of a local NGO allowed me to develop exactly these skills, overseeing documentation, managing memorandums with external partners, and coordinating teams across multiple projects. As secretary, I would utilise this experience in maintaining tournament calendars so members can plan ahead, creating records of society documents and contacts that carry forward each committee cycle, and ensuring our administrative foundations are always reliable. Most importantly, I would bring genuine passion for making debate at UCL as rigorous and welcoming as it has always been.
