Stanley Hoo

Hi everyone, I’m Stanley, this year’s DSS Science First-Year Representative, and I’m running to be your next Head of Science.

Being part of the Science Department this year has shown me how much impact we can have on how students actually learn data science. Workshops and hackathons shouldn’t just be standalone events; they should form a structured pathway that helps you go from a beginner to a confident builder.

If elected, I’ll focus on two main things:

1. A Clear Learning Progression

This year's tutorials were geared mostly towards beginners, but I think that we should also have some that will benefit intermediate or advanced data scientists as well. To do this, I’ll introduce a structured progression such as:

Python Foundations → Machine Learning → Deep Learning → Real-World Deployment.

Each workshop will build on the last, so by the end of the year you’re capable of building complex, real data science projects.

2. Bigger Hackathons

Hackathons are where YOU truly test yourself. This year, we hosted the Lovable and Stock Prediction Hackathons, both great hackathons for beginners, but too short to build something more complex. Next year, I want to host at least one full-day hackathon per term, potentially even an overnight one, with larger prizes and potential industry sponsorship, so intermediate and advanced data scientists can showcase their skills better.

Let’s raise the standard together.

Vote for Stanley for Head of Science.
