Hello!
My name is Teo and I'm a first year undergraduate Language and Culture student. Aside from the cliché 'languages and words are my life' (which they pretty much are) I can sum up my literary diet as expanding, which is the essence of book club in my opinion. I joined in hopes of finding like-minded people and those with different perspectives alike, to talk about new, old, favourite, gripping, captivating, boring, esoteric and feel-good books alike. I aim to bring the tools the club needs to make sure that crucial values are respected- in terms of welfare; respect and boundaries, open spaces for discussion but also for inward deliberation, inclusivity and representation of each member.
I'm especially interested in works of translation, like 'Love in the Time of Cholera' by García Marquez and recently feminist hispanic poets, like Yolanda Castaño and Luna Miguel. However, my all-time favourite book (for now) is 'Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea' by Jules Verne, a childhood favourite. I'd love to be able to discuss concerns and ensure the club and its members are kept safe- while developing a community in which we can all add, or just listen, to each other's opinions and takeaways on all the books!!!
thank you :)
Hi! I am Leo and I am running for Welfare Officer for our much beloved bookclub!
I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the society and think it can be further improved a plenty! I hope to foster an even more welcoming and inclusive environment in the coming year by doing the following:
- Making the weekly discussions feel less like a classroom-like by not arranging the seats in rows!
- Encouraging more participation by organising a wider range of events like quiz nights, book swaps or a crafty bookcover painting evening!
- Introducing a mini powerpoint pressie event, where members can share their fav reads and crazy takes!
- Creating a cosy environment with matching playlists and welfare snacks for all!
- Being a friendly and welcoming face, that knows how to help or where to direct anyone who might not be feeling their best in any way:)
