Asset Management Society: Welfare Officer

Hey everyone! 

My name is Alex, a first year BSc Philosophy, Politics, and Economics student, and this year I've had the pleasure of joining UCLAM as First-Year Representative. Having joined with little exposure to finance, I was surprised at how beginner-friendly the bootcamp and related events were. It has provided me with an amazing opportunity to learn and grow alongside like-minded peers. Beyond just technical knowledge, what made a difference to me was the supportive and welcoming community during the events. The senior leadership team was always welcoming of questions and concerns, without the expectation of previous knowledge. This is what I strive to continue and build upon as Welfare Officer next year.

Speaking 5 languages, paired with lifelong international education, I feel confident in my ability to provide a welcoming space at UCLAM to people from all backgrounds and degree disciplines. I see the promotion of a supportive and inclusive environment as vital for continued interest in UCLAM events, where everyone can grow, learn, and connect together. Whether it was asking committee members for advice or meeting new people at events, someone was always willing to share their knowledge and experiences.

This society has vastly changed my approach to recruiting in finance and has built meaningful relationships, and I hope to do the same for the next cohort next year.

What I Bring to the Table 💼

• The Outreach experience: As Head of Community Outreach for UCL Street Aid, I manage relationships between NGOs and partners. Building bridges is what I do best. But all of this comes effortlessly for me. Why? Because, to me, there is nothing more precious that being to learn about a person - and all that is unique to them!
• The Finance Pulse: I study Management Science and have completed two Private Equity (PE) internships. 📊
• The People Person: While I love numbers, the people inspire me most. People are the reason why I ever started things. 💗

Meeting "legacy" speakers like Mike Bessell, CFA (Managing Director at Invesco). His work taught me that finance isn't just about 'bricks and mortar' or cold data. It’s about the human relationship with the world around us. 🌍
