I am Samir Ali, a third year BSc Social Sciences student currently on a year abroad at the University of California, Berkeley.
More about me, I was educated at a non-selective state school for my entire life, I am from Epsom in Surrey (no I'm not some posh twat!) and I am also half Filipino and half Bangladeshi.
I have 2 years of experience on the 93% Club UCL committee, being the First Year Rep in 2023-24 and the Vice President in 2024-25. These roles have allowed me to understand how the committee works together and how our relationship with the national 93% organisation works.
Here are some of my proposals that I would want to implement if I were President:
1. Diversify social events.
• I want to include more social events that are not at the pub or have alcohol involved. This is to appeal the society to a wider audience who may refrain from coming because they are uncomfortable in a pub setting.
2. Continue collabs with other societies
• I want to continue collaborating with more societies and social mobility related organisations, so that we can grow our membership base and overall awareness of our society across UCL.
3. Explore events within academia
• Having professors speak in a panel event would allow members to understand more deeply about this topic.
4. Merch
• Merch was in the works when I was on the committee last year but never made it out in the end. It would be great for us to have merch that would be lowkey but represents our society well!
Hello!
I am Adam and hopefully you have all seen my face before at some of the socials or on the whatsapp group :) I am running for president to help keep the 93% club fun, engaging, and also supportive of our members career goals.
Of course, we love pub socials, but I will guarantee biweekly socials where we do different activities throughout the year. I want to switch up the activities we do to keep it fresh and to make every social even better than the last! I am thinking of seasonal socials to celebrate Halloween, Pancake day, St Patricks day, Chinese new year etc (e.g imagine free pancakes with a fun quiz or movie!). We will also do some activity socials, whether that is ice skating, bowling, a sports activity, games nights, hosting potlucks etc. I will make sure there is something for everyone.
And I will make sure all of the socials are free or heavily subsidised / cheap! I will do my very best to obtain as much funding as possible to make this happen for you all.
In terms of career events, I will set up a system where our members can submit a form outlining what help they may need in building their career or any concerns they may have. I will then work closely with the 93% club head office in enacting this support and setting up careers events which allign with these needs. I am currently participating in the 93% club leadership academy, so I have begun working closely with head office already!
Overall, I want to make the next year of the 93% club at UCL a great one :)
I am standing for President of The 93% Club because this society made a real difference to me, and I want others to feel the same support. Coming from a state school, I know how intimidating networking, internships, and applications feel without the same guidance as others. The Club provided honest advice and a community that understands these challenges. As President, I want to build on that.
My focus will be on three things. First, access: more workshops with alumni and employers so members get clear career help. Second, confidence: growing mentoring and social events so new members feel welcome immediately and have people to turn to. Third, impact: working with other societies to champion state-school students across campus.
I have the proven experience and leadership to take our community forward. Having served as your Welfare and Communications Officer, I managed our social media, created content, and ensured our online space remained inclusive. I don’t just understand our mission; I’ve actively communicated it and signposted members to support.
I am organised, reliable, and committed. Through student leadership and event planning, I have learned to run things well and listen to ideas. I care about widening opportunity and want The 93% Club to be a place where every member feels supported and ready to succeed.
