Tamil Society: Welfare Officer

Hi, my name is Sam and I am a first year medical student!

I have really enjoyed Tamil Society this year, and so I would love to be on committee next year! I would be a good fit for welfare officer because I am a good listener and very caring, but also diplomatic in tough situation between committee members and so would be able to deescalate the situation and ensure the wellbeing of all committee members.

I would like to stand for Welfare Officer because I am keen in ensuring everyone's safety is prioritised and nothing is able to jeopardise the members of TSOC, from enjoying their experience within the society. After having worked with Tamil refugees and asylum seekers in ensuring their safety during my Pro – Bono work, it increased my passion further to be a Welfare Officer for Tamil Society as I have become more interested in problem – solving and communicating with vulnerable individuals. I am also interested in standing for Welfare Officer as I want to increase the accessibility of Tamil Society as to ensure that everyone (regardless of differences) feels welcomed and safe enough to communicate in confidentiality, any issues that may arise. As Diversity Prefect, I enjoyed taking initiative to inquire about everyone’s feelings and concerns about welfare at school and therefore I am excited to continue doing this for Tamil Society. Furthermore, as a previous committee member of my sixth form TSOC, I raised awareness through presentations on issues concerning the physical and mental well-being of Tamils in Eelam during War. I want to once again bring awareness to the well- being of both Tamils in the society but also outside the society as well. As I study Law, a policy area which intrigues me is welfare violations and the ways in which welfare can be improved and this is yet another reason as to why I would like to stand for Welfare Officer.
