Hi my name is Kannan and I am running for Academic Surgery Chair of the UCL Surgical Society to enhance academic opportunities and promote surgical excellence. As a fourth-year medical student passionate about surgery, research and education, I am committed to fostering an engaging and supportive learning environment.
As Events Director of General Surgery, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Academic Surgery to run a journal club, providing students a platform to analyse key surgical literature. Additionally, I delivered tutorials for pre-clinical students and developed SBA questions and Cheat Sheets as an Education Officer for the Anaesthesia Society. Beyond education, I have actively pursued surgical research in form of audits and systematic reviews which has developed my analytical and research skills. Which I would like to utilise in order to teach other students on how to get involved and carry out research. If elected, I will expand surgical teaching initiatives, increase research opportunities, and foster collaborations with senior surgeons. I am dedicated to ensuring all students access high-quality academic resources and mentorship to develop their surgical skills. I hope to earn your support in this election and work together to empower the next generation of surgeons.
Hi, I'm Dhanyata!
Academic Surgery remains one of the least accessible surgical specialties for students. Our curriculum does not engage us in research, and for many, the iBSc is the first time we navigate how to conduct research. With the removal of UKFPO points for research and the shift toward randomised allocations, students have less incentive to engage in research—only to realise it is a key portfolio requirement for CST and ST3 applications. Without structured guidance, mentorship is inconsistent, often depending on research groups or senior students.
As Academic Coordinator for iNUGSC, I partnered with two journals to offer free publication for selected abstracts and give winners the chance to publish full reports for free—breaking down barriers to research. Now, I want to expand access, increase representation, and make research more applicable to surgical practice.
As your Academic Surgery Chair, I would implement:
🪡 SUTURE (Surgical Teams for Undergraduate Research & Evidence) – A platform for students to form research teams and start projects.
🥅 GRAFT (Guidance, Research, and Academic Feedback Tutorials) – Drop-in sessions run by clinical training fellows to support students with research and presentations.
🗣️ VASC (Virtual Academic Surgery Conference) – Built during COVID, VASC covers academic careers, research skills, oral presentations, and practice-changing research. I want to build on this foundation with more interactive, clinically relevant discussions.

Hello everyone! My name is Jia and I am a third year medic at UCL with a passion for surgery, research, and academic mentorship. As the founder and organiser of the International Global Health and Surgery Conference 2025 as Global Surgery Chair last year, I have successfully brought together delegates and speakers from around the world, fostering global collaboration and knowledge exchange in surgery.
My experience as the Global Surgery Chair and my involvement in international neurosurgery research teams have strengthened my leadership, organisational, and research skills. I was also awarded the Rani Rawji Studentship and actively engaged in research at the UCL Cancer Institute. These experiences allow me to guide students in navigating research opportunities and taking initiative to start projects in medical school.
As Academic Surgery Chair, my goal is to empower students to engage with research by creating accessible opportunities to develop their skills. I aim to organise structured courses on surgical research, methodology, and critical analysis, bridging the gap between medical education and hands-on academic involvement. By fostering an inclusive, research-driven community, I hope to inspire future surgeons to pursue innovation and contribute meaningfully to the field of surgery. Further to this I aim to conduct teaching series on different aspects of surgery and anatomy which have been covered in the curriculum to supplement student's learning and interest in surgery.
