Hi! I’m Iman, a 2nd year and member of the welfare subcommittee.
Medical school is tough and sometimes all you need is a hug. For me, RUMS Welfare is the hug of UCLMS and I happen to be a great hugger. As Welfare VP, I aim to ensure all voices are heard, facilitating change in the medical school for the better, whilst celebrating and continuing its successes.
My main plans are:
-
Hug in a Mug
Placements, especially during clinical years, can feel isolating. Online ‘Hug in a Mug’ support sessions will allow us to connect, regardless of location. Sessions will be directed by your needs.
-
RUMS Family Reunions
Events to reconnect with your RUMS family termly, helping build stronger bonds. E.g. Big Fat Family Quiz.
-
Collaboration amongst RUMS societies and subcommittees
Enabling societies to support and learn from each other, through fun. E.g.
- Snack and Study; Academic x Welfare collaboration
- Music bingo; RUMS Music x Welfare collaboration
- Wellbeing sessions; Medics4Medics/ EDI x Welfare collaboration
-
Promote relatability via social media
Celebrating everyday us, e.g. Day in the Life can showcase our similarities, helping to alleviate isolation and stress.
Having roles, including being a welfare rep, Y1 academic rep and school pastoral lead, puts me in a position to holistically support, listen and advocate for you. I am great at collaborating, organising and getting the job done. As your next Welfare VP I will ensure everyone is heard, standing by my motto “No troll left behind”.

Hello, everyone! I'm Jane, I'm a second year and I am dedicated to fostering positive culture in RUMS.
As one of your Welfare Reps this year, I’ve gained valuable insight into both the strengths of RUMS Welfare and areas that need improvement. I want to build on past initiatives while introducing new ways to make welfare more present, accessible, and impactful.
My goal is to make RUMS Welfare not just a safe space for those in need but also a driving force for a healthier mindset among medical students.
To achieve this, I will aim to:
- Improve general presence by actively engaging with the community:
- Strengthen the connection between Welfare Reps and students so they are recognized as trusted, approachable figures
- Enhance social media outreach:
- Maintain regular posts on Instagram while introducing more interactive formats, such as interviews, vlogs, and weekly Q&As
- Reform regular welfare events:
- Implement a rotating event schedule with discussion topics that directly address student concerns, ensuring greater relevance and participation.
By leading RUMS Welfare, I want our community to move away from the idea that burnout and mental struggles are “part of the experience” and instead encourage a lifestyle where well-being is prioritized.
I would be very grateful to be your Welfare VP and I would work hard to achieve these goals and make my ideas a reality.
I appreciate your support!
See you around 👋
Key Aims:
- Better Support for Late Summer Assessments (LSAs)
Many students sitting LSAs feel more comprehensive academic and mental health support would be helpful. I will organize targeted tutorials based on student requests and pair them with mindfulness sessions to ensure no one feels left behind. RUMS Welfare is the perfect platform. - Making Exam Support (SORA) More Accessible
Many students struggle to access exam adjustments because the process can be unclear. Streamlining and promoting clear guidance on SORA applications with in-person sessions for those who find technology challenging, reduces stress when it matters most. - Strengthening Year Rep Support
Year reps are a vital but underused resource. I’ll boost their visibility and integrate them further into the welfare community at RUMS, particularly for freshers, ensuring all students have another place to refer to knowing no concern is too small as many feel more comfortable immediately seeking help from the professional support.
Welfare Experience – As Rowing Captain, I’ve supported my peers and when to turn issues to the right service, as well as understanding the delicate and confidential nature of concerns.
Passionate, Approachable & Accessible – I care deeply about student well-being and will actively listen to suggestions regarding further change to welfare, as it is your voice that I want heard, opening polls on the RUMS Welfare Instagram to start.
💙 💛 Together, let’s build a Happier and more supported RUMS community.
