I am running for RUMS equity officer as I am passionate about championing the voices of the whole medical school. I wish to unify the efforts of all the amazing subcommittees who are already working so hard to create an equitable environment at UCLMS - for example, the EDI committee, or SIHS - in order to ensure the efforts and priorities of students are heard and relayed to the medical school.

If I am elected, I endeavour to listen to the concerns of both pre-clinical and clinical years, and base my work on the priorities of the feedback of ongoing projects and individual concerns. As a member of the EDI committee for my iBsc department, and my experience on RUMS RAG and welfare subcommittees, I am well equipped at carrying out the work required for this role and would love the opportunity to give more back to the RUMS community.

Poppy Pendergast

Hi, my name is Poppy and I’m currently in first year. The RUMS committee really helped me feel at home at UCLMS this year and put on so many amazing events where I made so many memories and new friends, so I really want to contribute to that next year!

I’m really passionate about EDI and making sure that everyone in the medical school feels like they belong and is supported by the wider community, and I would use my previous experience of EDI roles to help make RUMS a place for everyone to thrive. I also think I’m an approachable person and a good listener, so I hope that people would feel comfortable talking to me about any concerns they might have and I would do my absolute best to help resolve it.

I have a few ideas myself, such as drop-in sessions to talk about any EDI specific concerns, events celebrating different communities within the medical school, and fundraising challenges, but I would also definitely be open to any suggestions raised and I would try to make them happen!

I would also be keen to focus on some aspects of EDI that are sometimes overlooked, like financial inequality, so I would look to work together with the rest of the committee to find ways to make events more accessible for everyone.

If I was lucky enough to be elected I would be dedicated to supporting the other members of the committee and working together with them to make RUMS better than ever!

Thank you very much for your consideration :)
