Having attended Public Speaking Society's workshops this term, not only was it helpful for technical tips, but also for boosting confidence when talking in front of a public I may not know. Now, with this opportunity, I want to be able to give something back to the society, helping in its organisation. Helping to make it enjoyable for everyone regardless of past exposure to public speaking.
I already have past experience organising events, working with a team of 7 during the length of a year to organise a EU model event in my school. I thus understand the time management, organisational skills and effort that this role requires.

If given the opportunity, I will work hard with the rest of the committee to ensure that future events run smoothly and continue to be as useful and instructive as they are fun.

Thank you for your time!

Clara Cohn

Hey everyone!

Many of you may know me as first year rep, but beyond that, you’ve probably seen me around giving speeches, chatting during pizza nights, or even playing Werewolf together during our socials! The point is: I’m an approachable leader who loves engaging with our community.

And that’s exactly what an Events Officer should do! I want to hear from YOU, your ideas and preferences, to create events that truly excite and challenge you.

My aim is to organise events beyond the regular academic learning. I want you to feel like public speaking is not an academic challenge to endure, but a pleasurable, interesting, perhaps even comfortable space to be in. I'll promote this through:

  1. Experimenting different session styles so everyone is challenged in different ways
  2. Bringing in professional speakers to share their insights and stage tricks
  3. Encouraging members to take the stage in London’s biggest public speaking competition
  4. Organizing  more initiatives that make the stage less intimidating by making you step out of your comfort zones (just like the Speech for a Cookie that filled 100% sign-ups)
  5. I understand public speaking is an academic responsibility as well, which is why I hope to simulate real-world interviews, elevator pitches, and presentations that no course prepares you for
  6. Continuing our fun games + socials! :)

If you're looking for someone who will not only organize events, but create an environment where you'll actually want to speak, I'd love to have your vote. Thanks :))

Shakeel Majeed

TLDR: this society has taken me from nervously shaking my legs on stage to presenting in front of my cohort, events helped me to stay committed/inspired and I hope to deliver more fun/informative events

For those that don’t know me, I’m Shakeel, a 1st year studying Management Science. I’ve been coming to Public Speaking Society every Tuesday since the start of the year, bar a few weeks when coursework had me in a chokehold.

I believe this society serves as the perfect example of how welcoming societies should be. I’m sure you can agree that the society has taken public speaking, something terrifying, and shown it in a positive and fun way. The weekly workshops have definitely transformed my life, as I’ve gone from nervously shaking my legs on stage in high school to presenting in front of my 100 course mates and professors.

I’m running for Events Officer to create even more impactful experiences for existing members and those interested in joining the society. From bringing in esteemed speakers to fun socials like Werewolf, events are key to keeping you inspired to continue on your public speaking journey and subconsciously improve your public speaking skills while having fun.

If elected, I plan to continue running the usual events (socials, guest speakers, etc.) but also run events on other days of the week, to give you more time to exercise your public speaking muscles. Of course, I'll always be open to your ideas for events,  and will work with you to make them happen.

Thanks
