Namaskaram.
My name is Colin Saji and I am a first-year medical student and am very privileged to also be called one of your FYRs. I am standing for Cultural Secretary because I believe I have what it takes to bring you an experience of God's own country without you having to go on Air India.
This belief comes from a variety of roles I have served, including my standing in my community as part of the youth committee for my local Malayali association in Bristol, where I have contributed through anchoring for our Onam programme, or as a young catechist in my local palli where I get to teach Malayali children our shared history, or more recently as your FYR where I have supported the smooth running of some of your favourite events, like Take Me Out, and helped plan upcoming socials.
I promise to take on board your feedback and ideas during my service and I will strive to give back to the society that has given me so many memories to remember in my first year. With lots of ideas and plans for the coming year, I hope that I can show that being a Malayali at UCL is much more than just showing up to Onam to eat sadhya or getting absolutely hammered for the boat party (although that's part of the experience).
Like the famed advertisement says "Vishwasam athalle ellam", I'd like to ask for your trust and support.

I would like to put myself forward for the role of cultural secretary as I believe I am someone that has a genuine passion for preserving and displaying our Malayali culture. It is something that is very important to me personally and I want to use this role to help encourage other people to also embrace this for themselves. I have helped in leading cultural activities in my home community such as helping out with hosting events such as Onam, which I feel has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding on how Malayali culture has changed within our generation. I was also a part of my school’s diversity community, which has given me a whole new appreciation of how important culture is, and it also provided me with the opportunity to put forward lots of fun and exciting ideas for cultural events, which I aim to do if I was able to get this role as well.
