Hey everyone, I am Katie, and I am a third year Natural Sciences student. During my past 2 years at Kinesis as web editor and copy editor, I have loved working with people with such a range of talents from writing to artwork, which I think is what makes Kinesis so special. I have always communicated, left comments and supported peers through the editing period, supporting our talented writers who make great work.
This year I am hoping to take on more responsibility by running for president. My 2 years of experience on the Kinesis committee have given me insight into the running of the society and what important things should be maintained this year. I also have new ideas that I would hope to introduce as president that I think would really benefit the society.
As president I would hope to increase the number of social and academic events to foster the collaborative and community feel at Kinesis. This includes improving the newsroom to make the writing process more social and provide help for new writers, increasing collaboration with other societies, and organising academic talks and social events to allow our society to connect.
I have really enjoyed being a part of Kinesis these past two years and would love the chance to be the next president and maintain the high standard of writing, podcasting and artwork that we have at Kinesis.
I would love to take on the role of President with Kinesis next year.
For the past year, I have been co-editor-in-chief for Pi Media magazine, providing me with experience in the organisational and creative sides of directing a magazine. I have learnt how to schedule a realistic timeline for myself and other writers and editors, and how to make sure things run smoothly whilst being friendly and uplifting in each interaction. I know the importance of paying attention to detail in order to uphold quality of writing and editing, while keeping the bigger creative picture in mind.
Before my committee position this year, I held the roles of writer and editor, meaning I know what it is like to work at this level within a magazine, too. As such, I know what makes a helpful leader, and what doesn't.
In the past year, I have worked more closely with the president of Pi, and seen the level of organisation, commitment and engagement such a position requires. I truly believe I have the skill-set and passion that would make me a great candidate. I will be studying the 4th year of my Neuroscience MSci, and one of the aspects of my degree that I have most enjoyed has been the communications side: making presentations, posters and writing News & Views articles. Combining this love for communication with my love for all things science through this presidency would be incredible, and I would do my absolute best for the society.
