Hello, I am Jamie, a second-year Biochemistry student! I love Japanese food, culture, anime and music, so I travel to Japan almost every year!! I've joined Japan Society since year 1 as I'm always excited to meet the people who shared the same passion.
I want everyone to have fun in Japan Society, so I am running for Welfare Officer and Secretary!
Why me
- My passion
- I have prioritised and participated in most of the J-Soc events, so I've got plenty of ideas about how to make them even better.
- Japan Society is a welcoming space for everyone, and I want to strengthen the connections of our community, so that everyone feels included.
- Sub-committee experience
- Last year, I helped run various events and learned about how things are organised, so I am confident to handle secretarial responsibilities!
Goals
- Get members more involved
- Run the subcommittee to let passionate members bring their ideas in life and organise their own events.
- Release committee meeting notes to make decision-making more transparent.
- Collect feedback from members and report the follow-up.
- Build more partnerships
- Help the presidents secure partnerships with shops and restaurants, not only for more member-only discounts, but also for more J-Soc goods.
- Maintain friendly relationships with other Japan Societies, create more chances for our members to make new friends.
- Ensure smooth operations
- Organise regular committee meetings and ensure every member fulfils their role.
Vote for me please!!
Hi! I'm Fei, I was born in China, and moved to Cambridge at the age of 9.
As someone with a multicultural background, I deeply appreciate how Japan Society serves as a welcoming space where people, regardless of their origins, can come together to celebrate Japanese culture.
Having been a regular member in my first year and a part of the sub-committee in my second, I have gained valuable insight into the types of events members enjoy as well as the planning involved in making them successful. This also strengthened my ability to work closely with committee members.
A strong welfare system and well-organised committee are essential for creating a positive environment, and as a Psychology and Language Sciences student, I bring an understanding of mental well-being and communication to the role. My background has equipped me with skills in active listening, conflict resolution, and inclusivity, which I hope to apply to ensure every member feels heard and valued.
What I hope to achieve:
- Improved communication:
- Society WhatsApp group chat with an announcement-only channel
- Changes to Office Hours:
- Increase visibility of the office hours form
- Option for total anonymity
- Boosting member engagement:
- “Input box” for event suggestions and feedback
- Supporting Japanese exchange students:
- Introduce social events that encourage integration
- Help them fully enjoy their time in the UK and with the society
- Preserving what makes Japan Society special:
- Build upon the successful events that members already love
