Sothysen Tuyhor

I am standing in this election as a passionate committee member and current first year rep of IR Society. I feel my experiences best represent the perspective of fellow members as passionate and curious people. As President I would intend to embark on a plan of:

  • Expanding funding and support for more events (especially continuing the IR Soc. Film Fest. as a tradition).
  • Increasing inter-society collaboration (events or mutual promotion could increase awareness and community engagement)
  • Finding more IR-related events outside of London (like adding the Athens Democracy Forum to our current Global Peace Summit in Thailand and LUDS).

My time as a Politics and International Relations student, including the incredibly valuable months as First Year Rep, has only reinforced my overall interest for IR. Curiosity and togetherness has always been central to the UCL community ethos, and I appreciate how the society embodies this in its considerate emphasis on different people coming together. I have thoroughly enjoyed my current experience of roughly five months which have provided me with moments to witness firsthand the labour-intensive and time-consuming logistic feat that is not only organising events but also governing the society. This service has taught me well enough that I felt confident to be the organiser and film programmer for the ongoing IR Society Film Festival which has thus given me the experience that encouraged me to run and represent you.

Thank you for your consideration.

Deniz Guven

As President of IR Society, my goal is to inspire creativity and expand opportunities for members. I will focus on:

Enhancing Career & Internship Opportunities – Organizing a Politics & IR Career Fair, connecting students with experts and organizations, and providing a platform for professionals to guide students on securing internships.

Expanding Circum Mundum – Growing the society journal by providing platforms for students to publish their essays. Continuing the podcast and introducing a talk-show format where members can actively engage with episodes.

Diversifying Events – Sustaining creative events like the IR Film Festival and introducing other formats to explore international affairs in innovative ways.

Growing the Team – Bringing in more Events Coordinators to expand the number of events we host while maximizing the team’s efficiency.

Strengthening International Collaborations – Building on our successful international events (such as the trip to Bangkok in January) by collaborating with diplomacy societies in countries such as the Netherlands, U.S., China, and beyond to foster real global engagement.

Finally, having already served on the committee this year, I am deeply familiar with the society’s strengths and potential. With this insight, I am committed to expanding its benefits for students—ensuring that every member feels that joining this society is a valuable step toward their academic, professional, and personal growth in international affairs.
