Hi, I’m Vanessa! My goal for running is to create opportunities for you to engage in meaningful discussions, build wide-reaching connections, and get the most out of IR soc.
That means:
- Diversifying speaker lists - Bringing in analysts, economists, policymakers, and activists for discussions with new formats.
- Inter-society collabs - Exploring IR’s intersection with culture, sport and the arts.
- Interactive, team-based events like Policy Hackathons, where teams tackle pressing global challenges, Crisis Simulations, where experts walk students through a real-world political crisis, and UN-style debates to practice tackling real-world challenges.
- Increasing your input for events - dedicating a forum where members can suggest event ideas, topics and improvements.
- Career Networking - Connecting students with alumni and professionals in diplomacy, international law, NGOs, and global business.
With extensive event planning and leadership experience, I’m efficient in managing logistics, always responsive to student feedback, and committed to delivering events that matter. With your support, I’m eager to bring fresh, engaging, and impactful experiences to IR Soc!
Hey there, political enthusiasts and aspiring dictators!
I’m Samuel Lee, and I’m running to be your Events Director for IR Society. This year, I’ve had the privilege of organising and contributing to some of our most exciting events, and I’m eager to take it even further next year!
Proven Experience, Bigger Plans
Over the past year as your Social Events Director, I helped organise our board games social night, worked on securing embassy visits, and am currently organising a Turkish panel event on campus.
Great events don’t just happen—they take planning, teamwork, and a vision. This hands-on experience has given me a clear understanding of what works and what can be improved, and I’m excited to build on this momentum next year.
More Interactive, More Engaging
If elected, I’ll focus on dynamic, interactive events, including:
-
IR Debates on current global issues – Invite UCL Professors and Experts to chair debates between IR Soc members on current global issues and events.
-
More embassy visits & panels – Expanding our access to Diplomats and Policymakers.
-
Socials that mix fun & discussion – Eg. Cultural nights, Movie nights & meetups where we can build friendships and share ideas.
An IR Society that reflects YOU!
I want to shape events you actually want to attend — so if you have an idea, I’ll make it happen. Let’s create a space where we debate, connect, and enjoy IR beyond the classroom.
Vote Samuel Lee for Events Director — because great events make a great society!
As Director of Academic Events for the International Relations Society this year, I hosted successful events such as the Kosovan Embassy visit, the collaborative Italian Embassy visit, the talk from MP Naz Shah, and various social events like the "Committee Cooks for You" and our games nights.
As Events Manager, I will work to expand our collaborations with embassies, policymakers, and academics to provide members with even more unique networking and learning opportunities. I also want to foster a stronger sense of community through innovative social events that bring people together beyond formal discussions. I will leverage the connections I forged with ambassadors, MPs, and politicians to work on events that create career opportunities and meaningful connections for our members.
My plan as Events Manager inlcude:
* Leveraging my connections in UK Parliament to invite government ministers
* Using my connections gained with embassies to invite foreign prime ministers
* Listen to member feedback and create events relevant to our community
* Create a flourishting society where students can learn about international relations through first hand experiences
* Focus on more social events like field trips, games nights, and art nights
* Be receptive; create events that you want to see!
My experience in planning and executing successful events has given me insight into what makes our society thrive, and with your support, I hope to continue enhancing the society’s reach and relevance.
