Miranda Leung

I have been fortunate enough to join academic talks and activities hosted by Geography society - andI would love to reciprocate that very same enthusiasm and excitement for the upcoming year with Geography society - which is why I am running for the Events Director for Geography Society.

I am Miranda, a first year undergrad whose interests lie within population geography, including pro/anti-natalist policies, ageing populations, and migration-development nexus; as well as health geography, specifically the epidemiological transition, and access to healthcare for the elderly.

I would love to host more interdisciplinary academic talks and activities. Geography is such a broad discipline, and I want to reflect that in the events we host. It would be great to have a variety of academic talks or even debates to cater towards different aspects of geography. However, eography society isn’t just about the field of discipline itself - but it should also run around its members! I would love to continue to foster the same comfortable environment for its members in the upcoming year - an environment where we can enjoy each other's company in a relaxed setting.

Whether you’re interested in deepening your academic knowledge or simply having a good time with fellow geographers, I’ll work to create an environment that serves both needs, where everyone feels welcome, engaged, and inspired.

It would be of great honour to have your vote.

Thank you for your time, and vote for me!

Holding a strong passion and interest in geography, I am always excited to create more events and opportunities for our members in the society. Being the current LGBTQ+ and outreach officer in the society, through organising speed socials and the winter ball I recognise the importance of building new connections and friendships through societies' events. I am eager to bring fresh ideas and work collaboratively with others in the society to build fun, interactive and welcoming activities for our members across all years, fostering a better environment and a better experience for all students. In addition, attending a number of diverse activities such as picnics, clubbing nights, bowling, pub socials and culture talks held by other societies, I can see a huge potential of the range and type of activities GeogSoc could hold in the coming year and I am excited to present and develop my ideas. I am highly motivated, organized, and approachable in daily life with strong communication skills. With my background and experiences from holding open days and volunteering in societies both my high school and other societies in UCL, I am eager to organize events, socials and outreach initiatives that ensure all members in our society feel welcomed and have fun. I am confident that I will be a suitable fit for events director in Geography Society and I am looking forward to improve, fundraise and develop together within the geography and beyond.

Apsara Bansal

I enjoy helping to arrange and plan events, as well as managing the logistics that surround them. I also feel that my communication, time management and organisational skills are in abundance, therefore I will be able to handle the challenges associated with devising events. Moreover, I believe that I am an easygoing, approachable person and so can effectively work as part of a team - I am eager to assist or be assisted. I possess substantial experience in orchestrating social events during my days in school, and thus can use the approaches that I have honed in this position. I hope to be able to coordinate a variety of inclusive gatherings that foster the community spirit of the Geographical Society.

I believe the UCL Geography Society plays a pivotal role in shaping the student experience. For geography students, particularly freshers, it serves as a direct gateway to the community and their degree, fostering an initial sense of belonging. Beyond the department, the society connects geography to the broader UCL community, engaging students in discussions, events, and activities, inspiring curiosity, providing ease and support, and fostering memorable bonds and friendships. I want to help facilitate these experiences by standing as Events Director for the UCL Geography Society, contributing to the social engagement and connection of geography within UCL.

My experiences in relevant roles help inform my decision and make me well-suited to the role. Having been a social prefect in sixth form, I’ve gained relevant experience creating, managing, and executing a range of different events, from leading celebrations of culture and community to a focus on student wellbeing and sports. A proud success of mine includes managing, fundraising, and planning our graduation ball with over 650 attendees alongside my team. I can't wait to leverage my experience to adapt to current legacy events in UCL geography—like the ball—but also expand opportunities and create dedicated spaces for geographical pursuits. Beyond this, my enthusiasm and positivity also enable me to be a well-fitted committee member. I hope to contribute to the society's productivity, growth, and continuity! Thank you!
