I am choosing to apply for the role of the 5th team captain as, over the past 6 months of being at university, I have developed a strong passion and connection for the UCL football club and, specifically, the 5th team. My enjoyment for the sport, along with the comradery with my teammates has given me something to look forward to every week and played a massive part in my experience of my first year at university. I would love to play a role in developing this passion for other people, especially in those who are nervous just starting university; I know exactly how they feel.
Even despite the admiration I have for the club, there are certain things I would like to change and implement, such as a buddy system for first year students at social events. Being the 5th team captain would give me a strong standing, to voice these ideas and potentially even lead to further involvement in the committee in the years to come.
On a more personal level, I have struggled with mental health issues in the past and, with men finding it hard to talk in the current society, I really appreciate the fact that the club is bold in their support for men going through mental health issues - reflected in the club's participation in Movember. With that being said, this motivates me to take part in the committee and be even prouder to represent the club as a team captain. Hopefully, being in a position of authority, would inspire other young men going through similar situations.
