Pelin Pala

Hi! This year I worked to contribute to the legacy of FilmSoc through my role as the Workshop Producer.

In this role I secured connections with Oscar and Emmy-nominated creatives, which have even led to shadowing opportunities for members. You can see our guests HERE.

The heart of FilmSoc lies in the friendships formed here. FilmSoc introduced me to my closest friends and lifelong collaborators. I want to ensure that everyone has the same opportunity. Socials and screenings are key for this, so I will work to expand our events.

I want to make it as easy as possible for members to dive into filmmaking. That means:
Increasing the funds for affiliate bids, allowing more members to receive funding for independent projects.
Hosting weekly technical workshops in addition to Q&A's to make sure everyone is confident using equipment.

Being President is about listening. I want everyone to be a part of the conversation. Over the past two weeks, I’ve reached out to members to gather feedback. Based on these I'd like to:
Continue Themed Socials
Strengthen Industry Connections
Support New Filmmakers (no experience = this is the place to learn)
Provide Film Festival Support for Members

As this year’s Workshop Producer I've dedicated my time and energy to Workshops. I want to extend that support to the rest of the society. Whether you need help navigating FilmSoc or breaking into the industry, I want to be the person you can turn to. I am dedicated to make FilmSoc the best it has ever been. Thank you!!

Eve Dyson

I live at the BFI. I actually don’t have a life. Aside from FilmSoc!

I’ve met some of my closest friends through FilmSoc over the past 2 years and the society has given me a film industry education that rivals my arts degree, so this is a community I’m highly passionate about - I want to foster an environment where everyone can get as much out of the society as I have.  My experience in assistant directing (Last Lights Out) and producing (Rope, GendFilm 2025) has granted me the skills for the administrative side of the presidency, and my general confident bubbliness means I have no fear in schmoozing alumni and getting a brilliant line-up of Q&A’s for the year ahead (Nolan, I’m onto you). Additionally, there are two new branches I am keen to impart for the long term:

Empowering Filmmakers through Technical Workshops
I’ll introduce regular technical and post-production workshops led by both students and lecturers. I want to create a space where every member feels empowered to contribute, regardless of experience.

Introducing a Screenwriting Community
I’ll establish a monthly writer’s room alongside writers’ workshops for aspiring screenwriters to collaborate, develop their craft, and bring their ideas to life with the support of the FilmSoc community.

Above all, I’ll continue fostering the energetic atmosphere that’s made my time in FilmSoc so rewarding. And for the real judgement, my Letterboxd Top Four are Sunset Boulevard, All That Jazz, Vertigo and The Hangover Part II

Shyamoli Shah

As president, I want FilmSoc to be the inception point for our creative ambitions & identities as future filmmakers. Everyone has to start somewhere, so how lucky are we to start here? Cinema as we understand it is changing before our eyes & as young people it's our prerogative to push boundaries & experiment with the scope of the artform. I see FilmSoc’s future as an incubator for various creative voices, fueled by more opportunities for expression & experience, whether practical or intellectual. I want to lead a society that captures the breath of UCL’s filmmaking community, encouraging diversity in our pursuit of storytelling & perspectives on cinema. Let’s embrace our youth & freedom as student filmmakers, exploring the conventions of style, narrative, & the spectrum of truth & fiction with our term films & documentaries. I envision this next year as one of risk & reward & aim to improve efficiency, so ideas can leap off the page & into reality. I also intend to maintain our society’s spectrum of engagement, upholding its warmth & inclusivity. As a 2nd year, I will be able to dedicate effort & time to execute my vision, & as SEIM I have experience on the committee. My dedication also extends to cinema itself: I skipped prom to watch Dr Zhivago, dyed my hair pink because of Lady Bird, & made the fatal error of taking a date to see Persona. However, these experiences don’t make me different, but reflective of FilmSoc’s passionate community, one I will be proud to

Louis Philpott

I want to push Film Soc into the future next year and increase the opportunities and studio facilities to a size which reflects the community:

  1. I plan to expand our studio facilities. The original Film Soc studio was demolished in 2004, and even though the society gained recognition after Emma Thomas mentioned us at the BAFTAs, we’ve been left with a small, basic space behind a cafe. I’ve found an exciting opportunity to partner with studio spaces 7 min away, once owned by Warner Bros. Using the excitement around the society, and the funds already generated from the sales from UCL’s Film Archive, now is the perfect time for this vital change which will allow more members to get involved.
  2. There aren't enough opportunities for casual members who love film but don't want to join a Term Film crew. I will organize weekly fun events like quizzes and movie clubs, and hold regular workshops with industry professionals to instruct use of the society's excellent equipment. My goal is to make sure casual film lovers feel welcome in Film Soc!
  3. Did you know you can get £500 for your own project? Or borrow the camera used for Interstellar and Wonder Woman for free? Many members aren't aware of these opportunities or how easy it is to access the resources on offer. My goal is to make the process of sharing these resources clearer and more accessible to everyone in the society.
