During the past four months since I joined The Cheese Grater, I have become invested in the society on a personal level. From the beginning, everyone in the society has been infinitely kind and welcoming; helping me feel at home in this huge university as a first year. More than just an opportunity to get involved with journalism, The Cheese Grater is a community with a common goal -- informing students and pissing off the uni -- that unites us in a way that is very rare in societies. Knowing that this hasn't always been the case, I am committed to helping maintain this atmosphere, and help those who may not empathise begin to feel the same.
As hopefully the Investigations team has come to realise; I am a good listener, empathetic, and am great at advocating for others (a good think too, otherwise I'd be a terrible journalist.) I would like to use these skills to help support our members and and protect their wellbeing in my role as Welfare Officer. I would be honoured to be the primary contact for everyone who needs additional support in advocating for themselves, or breaking down current barriers to accessibility that may exist in The Cheese Grater.
This Society has made my first year of university orders of magnitude better than if I had never joined. The people, the projects and -- most importantly -- the Monday night post-investigations meet ups have brought me so much joy. All I ask is that you give me the opportunity to help others feel this way as well.
