Hi, I’m Yoko, a second-year BASc student on the Health and Environment pathway.

I was part of the committee last year, and while I really enjoyed it, I do regret that we didn’t have more society-wide events, including welfare-focused ones. That said, I was always in touch with many BASc students across different years and pathways (mostly from spending TOO much time in the common room) and I made sure people’s voices were heard, which I believe is an important quality for a Welfare Officer. Given how broad our course is, I understand that finding a sense of belonging can sometimes be a challenge. As a Welfare Officer, I would work to create plenty of opportunities for BASc students to connect with each other and set up a system to address the different welfare concerns that you might face!

Our course is such a vibrant mix of interesting people who are so passionate about well - alot of exciting things! I know how jam packed uni life can be from balancing work, to societies and social activities. As welfare officer I hope to support the department and really just be a friendly face who is always around for a chat. I will listen to any thoughts relating to BASc or uni life and also help signpost or get you in touch with any support services you might be looking for. I believe peer support is so important as we navigate so many life changes and events here at university. I have been involved in lots of music and scout projects where I have participated in several wellbeing centred roles and have also completed a Level 2 mental health peer mentoring course which enabled me to improve my communication, co-ordination and listening skills to increase my confidence in supporting and encouraging others. I have loved meeting new people this year and I feel like I learn from the people I meet everyday! I hope to inspire more connections like this and help organise some fun events with the committee including wellbeing related activities such as craft events, movie nights, quizzes, cultural activities and hikes for instance. As a Londoner myself I love the diverse and dynamic environment this city and by extension UCL has to offer and I hope to ensure BASc too remains an inclusive collaborative space so we can all make the most of our intersecting time here together.
