India Deans-Smith

Hello, my name is India and I am thrilled to be applying for the role of Head of Welfare. I am a fifth-year medical student and have been involved in many UCL committees including being President of the UCL Society "Sexpression" for two consecutive years and also acting as the Diversity and Inclusion Executive for the UCL MedTech Committee. My experiences in both of these societies have been centred around inclusion and well-being with welfare being a top priority of mine for all members of any society. My prior experience means that I know how to work as an effective part of a high-functioning committee and I have a wide range of ideas for welfare events that I have seen tried and tested.

I am keen to continue the excellent work of the WinF welfare committee by hosting welfare coffee and chat events, speed dating, buddy schemes, and much much more. I have experienced a warm welcome into the society and have enjoyed a plethora of events held by the society including HSBC share the vision. I am keen to further integrate into WinF by holding a committee position and I am excited to see how the society develops over the next year.

Thank you!

Callie Hou

Dear Members,

I am excited to run for the position of Head of Welfare 2024-2025! As a first-year representative at the Women in Finance Society, the inspiration I felt for organising 'Women in Finance' events made me realise how I wanted to help this society grow further. From coordinating guest speakers for our annual Share the Vision conference at HSBC to organising panel discussions, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of our society in shaping equal career opportunities for female students, particularly those, like myself, hailing from non-financial (personally design and management) backgrounds towards banking.

My leadership journey and active involvement in campus activities have equipped me with a diverse skill set and a deep understanding of organizational dynamics. Some highlights of my experiences include:

  • Shadowing the current Head of Sponsorship and participating in the facilitation of events and partner relations
  • Engaging in mentorship programs within the Women in Finance Society, Investment Society and ESG Society, while serving as a First-Year Executive in the Guild student committee with potential cooperation in the next academic year
  • Standing as the Business Society president in High school and Co-President of the National Economic Challenge (East Asia region), overseeing a significant annual participation of 20,000 students and spearheading various events, case competitions, and workshops both online and in-person
  • Leading different case/design competitions including ESG-integrated Fund, AI
Sejal Jain

Hello everyone! I'm Sejal, a BSc Economics student, running for the Head of Welfare. My journey with UCL WinF Society has significantly shaped my academic path, infusing it with valuable experiences. In the dynamic environment of UCL, where enriching experiences often coincide with academic and social challenges, it becomes crucial to cultivate a supportive atmosphere.

If elected, some of my objectives include-

1.Creating a Safe and Inclusive Space:

  • Ensure that the society is a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for all members.
  • Implement and promote a zero-tolerance policy for any form of discrimination or harassment.

2.Confidential Support System:

  • Establish a confidential support system for members who may need to talk to me about their concerns and worries.

3.Work-Life Balance Workshops:

  • Organise workshops on maintaining a healthy work-life balance as students, especially relevant to the demanding field of finance.

4.Well-being Check-ins:

  • Conduct regular well-being check-ins with members through surveys, or anonymous suggestion polls.
  • Use feedback to tailor welfare initiatives to the specific needs of the members.

5.Collaborate with University Services:

  • Establish connections with university counselling services and other support resources. Ensure members are aware of available services.

I am committed to ensuring that our members feel assured of having access to confidential, immediate, and efficient support. If you stand with me, then VOTE FOR ME!

Manteer Kaur Dhillon

I am nominating myself for the role of Head of Welfare for the Women in Finance society as I am deeply passionate about creating an inclusive environment for all women pursuing a career within the financial sector. Having a proactive role within the society will enable me to usemy previous experiences, including securing successful internships for prominent financial firms, to effectively mentor and support members to achieve their goals within the industry. I understand firsthand the impact of mentorship, networking, and the sharing of resources to assist one in thriving within this sector. Therefore, as the Head of Welfare, I aim to expand these opportunities to ensure that every member feels seen, heard and supported.

If successful, I aim to bring to this role not only just a vision, but a concrete plan to enhance our society's welfare initiatives. This includes establishing a mentorship program pairing new-comers with experienced students that have valuable knowledge of the sector and developing a resource hub for academic and career support. Moreover, I recognise how stressful application season can be and aim to build a network of collaboration, focusing particularly on well-being and mental health to help members through these periods.

My goal is to grow the Women in Finance Society into a supportive community where every member can thrive and become the best version of themselves.

Sophia Engelen

Hey everyone, my name is Sophia and I hope to be your Head of Welfare next year! I am a first year Arts and Sciences student and am very interested in finance. In high school I was on committee in 6 societies and increased participation in all of them after COVID by actively recruiting and making these new members feel welcome in the club, so I have experience in this field.

I absolutely love the aims of this society yet felt there was one main issue this year, namely the lack of socials to meet other members! As your welfare officer I would aim to implement the following ideas:

  • Weekly socials to meet other society members (at pubs, or fun events like ice skating, rock climbing, paint nights etc.)
  • Combined socials with other finance societies (including those at other London unis)
  • Welfare brunches for members to share any concerns

By implementing these ideas, I hope to lower the barriers to participation in the society so that everyone feels welcome. Being a woman in finance is hard enough, so I want to make this club as open to new members as possible and make sure current members feel comfortable! I want to ensure everyone's ideas are heard, so please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

Mridula Rout

I've been a member of the Women in Finance society and am inspired by their commitment to further the purpose and aim of the society. The WinF community is diverse, inclusive and supportive. This motivates me to apply for the position of Head of Welfare so that I can actively contribute and play a role in expanding the society and making a positive impact. My aim is to make everyone feel welcome and supported. Additionally, this role gives me the opportunity to enhance my leadership, team-work and organizational skills, helping me grow towards being a better person and professional. This opportunity will give me a chance to grow my network and develop relationships with brilliant, smart, like-minded woman, which is exciting. I want to help make this society a safe space, where every woman feels like they can clearly express themselves and are well-equiped to pursue their career goals and lifestyle. This role perfectly aligns with my motivations and interests to support others and grow personally and professionally.

Ayesha Champenois

The academic environment is already a stressful one and once living alone, job applications and general life events are thrown in it is easy to begin to feel overwhelmed. It is thus, incredibly important to me that everyone feels actively supported. Throughout school I led many successful initiatives to do with wellbeing and mental health, in fact many of these initiatives are still implemented and I would love the opportunity to keep positively impacting my environment. Being in this welfare position would allow me to be a voice for my peers, where I can advocate for needs and concerns and make sure that everybody is able to have this voice heard. An appreciation for different perspectives, leadership and strong communication skills  are skills that I believe time and time again I have shown and I would love to be able to keep improving them through this role. Ultimately fostering the kind of environment where everyone is able to feel supported and valued is why I would love to be placed in this role.
