My passion for cultural rep is rooted in my desire to embrace the rich tapestry of Tamil cultures from Sri Lanka, India, Singapore, and so on where Tamil is spoken. Recognizing the deep connection between Tamil heritage and our identity, it is crucial to understand its origins and variations. My motivation to stand as your rep stems from a concern for future generations and the potential for our culture to be overshadowed by the western world. I believe it's now our responsibility to keep our culture going forward for our parents and to value the lives of those lost during the identity war. Having been cultural rep already, I really enjoyed being able to initiate new ideas and lead our very first cultural event (Pongal) in ucl tsoc’s history, which I hope continues going forth in the committees to come. I'd love to be a part of it again to expand our previous ideas and make it bigger and better next year, by building upon everything I've learnt this year. If I have the opportunity again, I’d like to explore the different aspects of Tamil culture as well, e.g: music, dance, art, and language, which all shape how we are today. We could have workshops on each aspect spread throughout the year, for example a kolam (rangoli) and art workshop. I'll also ensure to create a welcoming space, where as your rep I'll listen to all your ideas, and we can create a vision together for our cultural society. Overall, I'd really appreciate it if you vote for me as your cultural rep. Thank you.

Sowmiya Thamotharan

Remembering and celebrating Tamil culture and heritage is so important and I'd love to help keep it alive through events during the year. Having been a freshers rep, I have experience and understand the process and preparation that goes behind various events such as for Thai Pongal. This experience has also helped me to develop a range of skills such as organisation, communication and responsibility which will be useful in this role. I'd love to work with committee to continually grow and improve the society and also develop a strong sense of community within it. Using my experience, I am also keen to help in delivering a huge range of exciting events that will create incredible memories for everyone!

Pathanchali Thevacumar

I envision cultivating a campus environment that is both inclusive and vibrant, where every Tamil student experiences a profound sense of pride in their cultural identity. My goal is to create a space where our rich heritage is not only acknowledged but ardently embraced. To achieve this, I aspire to organise immersive cultural activities that delve into the intricacies of Tamil traditions. These activities will serve as platforms for students to come together, learn, share, and joyously celebrate our cultural legacy, with a particular focus on offering Tamil lessons as a means of fostering deeper connections.

Furthermore, the celebration of Tamil festivals, including Pongal and Tamil New Year, will not only create lasting memories but also deepen our collective appreciation for our culture.

I am eager to collaborate, listen to your ideas, and ensure that our cultural initiatives truly represent the diverse voices within our community. My commitment extends beyond the role itself; it is a dedication to building a supportive community where networking, mentorship, and cultural exchange flourish.

Shanjika Kanageswaran

Hello,

I would like to be cultural rep, as I feel we are very lucky to be from such a background that is very diverse and unique. The culture itself is weaved into so many aspects of our lives starting from our religion, lifestyle all the way to the food we cherish and love to munch on.

As Tamil people we are fortunate to have a food palate that not only has a large range of variety but is also delicious. Being able to cook those plates of foods should be something that should be taught hence as a cultural rep I would aspire to start a page with recipes.

On the topic of food I will advocate for more cultural snacks like: the infamous mutton rolls and more. These can be given out at game nights; movie nights and other gatherings.

Social media is such a key component in our lives, as the cultural rep I would ensure that festive days or upcoming celebrations are announced online. As awareness is very important sometimes a small reminder can be helpful. Finding out about the history and background of an auspicious day is fun and educational.

Part of our culture is the 3 mukalai -: iyal, isai, nadagam. Inspired from this, I would organise workshops dedicated to music, poetry and dance. Inviting teachers and experts to gatherings can allow us to learn from them. These opportunities allow us to hone and sharpen our skills.
