Stephen Yiu

I am running for the position of Male Captain in our Taekwondo club because I am deeply committed to fostering camaraderie, discipline, and excellence within our community. As Male Captain, I see myself as a leader who can inspire and motivate fellow members to reach their full potential in their martial arts journey. I aim to lead by example, promoting teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship both on and off the mats. Through effective communication and collaboration with the club's instructors and members, I strive to create a supportive and empowering environment where everyone can thrive and achieve their goals in Taekwondo.

I'd like to be Men's Captain because I have several years of experience in Taekwondo and have gotten up to a black tag belt in ITF; this gives me the knowledge in taekwondo to teach others. I've been in the society since joining UCL and I've taken part in all competitions (I'm sure some of you have seen me around the venue!). I've done some bits and pieces of teaching (especially in the ITF training sessions) and I like to think that I was helpful in teaching patterns especially, as before UCL I mainly specialised in patterns with some sparring at times.

Reasons that I would be a good Captain is:

  • Trained in ITF taekwondo for 7 years, and also learnt some WT techniques and kicks since joining UCL.
  • I'm active in the society, showing up weekly and to a lot of different socials (missed a few recently, but I'll be back soon for those who've been missing me!).
  • I have experience in teaching in and out of sports, as I used to teach patterns to lower level belts in my previous club and also have had other leadership roles in secondary school.
  • I am approachable, friendly and always willing to lend a helping hand if you ever need help!

I think I have the skill and knowledge on the basics and concepts of taekwondo to be a captain, and I'm hopefully looking forward to teaching some of you what I know! Thanks for reading and please vote for me :)
