I want to run for squash president because I believe in the community of squash.

As much as I love playing the game itself, I have always recognised that it is the people that really make our society special. The camaraderie of teams, fighting tooth and nail together to vanquish a particularly noxious RUMS or Imperial side, the post match pints, where constructive criticism and banter are exchanged by players bonded by that most indefatigable of connections - the realisation that we all love the same slightly nerdy but widely entertaining game hitting a tiny black ball against a wall.

This sense of community is one I have treasured and an atmosphere in which I thrive. I have had the pleasure of getting to know most of the team and through my role as social secretary. When there have been socials I have thoroughly enjoyed organising events and leading the charge because I want squash to be a society that will provide a welcome piece of respite from the academic travails of UCL.

Whilst it is important to have a strong, close, knit society, with a president who truly gets to know the members, I would also put emphasis on the importance of competition and healthy ambition.

This society means everything to me and I will put my heart and soul into ensuring we are at the top of our game on the courts, and in the enjoyment, comradeship, and enthusiasm of each of our members.

Yours sincerely,

Luke Eadie

Hi guys,

If you don’t know me, I’m the quieter but more organised Social Squash Secretary (the louder, more chaotic one being the infamous Richard Beardshall). You may have seen me at social squash sessions, at team training or read my messages about the sessions and the tournament on the group chat. My role in the committee this year has given me insight into the workings of the committee and despite its success, there is still more that can be done to build a better community and offer more squash-playing opportunities!

What I aim to do:

  • More social squash sessions so they are less cramped, by getting the bookings before Term 1 starts
  • More team socials (meals out, seasonal events…) - to develop team spirit
  • More regular social events - whether Scala-based or more casual events to build community
  • Non-alcohol-based socials - coffee meetups before or after weekend social squash
  • Introduce termly social squash memberships - offer more flexibility
  • Organise and advertise events earlier
  • Regular committee meetings to aid communication and planning of events

So if you would like the chaos of social squash sessions to continue but with a bit more playing time, and you wish for more opportunities to socialise with squash mates, then please vote for me as President of the Squash Society!
