Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh! I am Balraj, and I am honoured to express my candidacy for Welfare Officer, a pivotal role for the well-being of our Sikh Society community. My first-year journey has been transformative, providing opportunities for sangat, exploring Sikhi, and forging meaningful connections.
Driven by a strong desire to contribute, I aim to ensure the society remains a steadfast source of support. Recognizing challenges in the transition to university, especially for international students like myself, I aspire to be a reliable point of contact for members facing difficulties. Leveraging my military experience and managing diverse commitments, I pledge to offer a listening ear and effective advice.
Acknowledging potential challenges faced as religious and racial minorities, I aim to foster an environment where open discussions about issues form a cohesive support system. I plan to enhance initiatives like Japji Sahib translations, emphasising Sikhi's role in navigating trials. By sharing insights on how Sikhi guides us through struggles, these events will provide practical tools for university life. Collaborating with external entities, such as larger Sikh organisations or UCL's student support and wellness centre, will broaden the scope of welfare-related events.
Committed to strengthening the welfare and support system within the Sikh Society, I anticipate serving and collaborating to create a thriving and supportive Sikh community at UCL.

My name is Suraj and I am applying to be your Sikh Society Welfare officer. I wish to be involved with the committee and help out wherever necessary as well as being approachable and available to help people out wherever needed.
I have enjoyed getting to know our Sikh soc team and feel that I would be able to work well with all of our members. In addition, recently, undertaking preparation for Langar on Campus has given me confidence that I can complete tasks given to me and contribute to a team.
I have developed my communication skills on multiple occasions especially through my volunteering - my previous experience working in a hospice has allowed me to be confident to strike up conversation with anyone. This is beneficial to being a welfare officer as the role relies on good communication with those who need it.
Through my engagement with Sikh soc events and personal qualities, I believe that I would be a good fit for this role and hope to work with the Sikh soc committee soon!
