Salsa Society: Bachata Team Captain

Hiya, I’m Riana and I would love to be next year’s captain for the bachata performance team.

I had never done bachata before joining the salsa society but since auditioning for the team back in October, I’ve completely fallen in love with it. I'm always dancing now, whether it be social dancing on nights out, booking rooms for extra practice, social dancing in the park or even on the street (😭).

I’ve been dancing on a team since I was 11 and was the dance captain for my local non-profit youth group since I was 15. I would make the choreo, teach at the weekly rehearsals and lead the team at our annual national competitions. So joining the bachata performance team was really refreshing, as it had been so long since I’d been on a dance team and not had all the responsibilities of leading the group. It really allowed me to focus on expanding my inventory of moves, work on my technique and have fun experimenting with styling. I’ve even begun learning the leader position on top of the following I’ve been doing!

But now I’ve realised how much I’ve missed leading a team.

It felt amazing bringing home the winning title at Birmingham this year and I’d love to apply my skills and experience to help the team do it again next year! As team captain, I want to push us to get the most out of rehearsals, organise more team socials (I’ve always got a wagamamas discount 😉) and honestly just share my love and passion for bachata with the team :)
